Petaluma Weather: A wine country climate.
I feel very lucky to live in Petaluma. In comparison to most Bay Area micro-climates, Petaluma's Weather offers a majority of cloudless, sunny days followed by wonderful breezy evenings. My family enjoys most of our late Spring, Summer and early Fall dinners outside. Many homes in Petaluma do not come equipped with air conditioning. Usually, a pleasant evening cross-breeze through open windows can cool a Petaluma home very comfortably.
This breeze, unique to Petaluma, has resulted in a relatively new wine growing sub-area of the Sonoma Coast, called The Petaluma Gap Area. On of my personal favorite wineries here is Kastania Vineyards. Most well-known for their delightful Pinots and flavorful Cab-Franc/Cabernet Sauvignon Blends, it is Petaluma winery not to be missed.
When I moved to Petaluma in 2004, I hadn't really thought of the town as part of wine country, rather a town within a very close proximity to vineyards and wineries. Then, in 2009, inspired by a generously sized back yard and encouraged by our friends at Kastania, we planted 80 Pinot grape vines behind our house and began a fledgeling vineyard of our own. This year we are anticipating our first small harvest and plan to start making wine with next year's more generous bounty.
Petaluma weather is some of the best that the San Francisco Bay Area has to offer. Not only are grapes happy here but as a resident of over 6 years, I am pleased to say that a lot of the people are too.
