Colorado Springs ~ The "Art" of the Downtown Experience

Colorado Springs... No we are not a big metropolis, but we love to adorn our streets with art. What does our art say about us, the "locals"...? Let's take a tour...

When you drive down, or up I-25 (the only Interstate in our city) there is only one exit to our downtown - Bijou (say: BEE-Jhoo) Street. Exit the highway and head east, into our downtown. Here you will be greeted by a humongous lime green question mark.  It is about 12 feet high and dominates the corner of Cascade and Kiowa (Say: KYE-o-wah). What does it say about Colorado Springs? I guess you won't know until you come visit, and form your own opinion!

The heart of our Downtown encompasses about 20 blocks (depending on where you want to draw the line...). One of the main streets is Bijou (I already told you how to pronounce it...) which runs East and West through downtown. There are so many great little shops and restaurants that you may lose your head- like the 10' tall metal snowman, just east of Cascade, on Bijou (...C'mon, say it right!). My favorite is Zeezos- a year-round costume shop that offers walls of wigs and so many different quality costumes, you'll wish it was Halloween every day!

Tejon (Say: TAY-hone)- another main downtown street, is home to many boutiques, local and national coffee shops, great resturants, pubs and delis and the hottest night clubs. In fact, some great "Urban Lofts" have been renoveated or built from scratch, offernig a new dimension of downtown living! This street offers great views of the mountains, as well, where you may even get a glimpse of the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo - located on the side of Cheyenne Mountain. We have one of the most successful giraffe breeding programs in the world. There are currently 19 giraffes living at our zoo, and they tend to be the "theme" of Colorado Springs. So, seeing a metal sculpture of a giraffe in suspenders - well, it's not too shocking!

Acacia Park is located in the center of Downtown. Throughout the season, you will love the festivals- of all kinds and farmers markets that are featured in this park. The colorful people and events as well as the musical Uncle Wilburs Fountain (...splashing fun for kids of all ages...) make Acacia Park a truly unique and fun place to be!  (Just LOOK at what was done to the tree that had to be removed!!) Bring your family and set up for a picnic in one of the many grassy areas, and you will be kept company by the local larger than life Bug Family.

The Southern end of downtown is more financial and business oriented, and offers the historic Antlers (Hilton) Hotel where you will find the popular Judge Baldwins Restaurant and Bar and some of the best views of Pikes Peak in the city. There is the main branch of our Pikes Peak Library, the Pioneer Museum (definately worth a couple hours of your time!), courthouses, banks and financial institutions, as well as plenty of office space. You will notice plenty of art sprinkled throughout the corners and sidewalks that will keep you company along your way. Whether you take the Downtown "Free Bus" from spot to spot, or navigate the streets by foot, you will always find something new in our downtown areas.     Welcome!
