Five Dysfunctions of a Team

The Five Dyfunctions of a Team centers on Kathryn Petersen, a former CEO who came out of retirement to build a dysfunctional group of executives into a cohesive and effective team.  Kathryn forces her colleagues to confront the behaviors that destroy most teams and adopt the five characteristics of a truly cohesive one.

We want a team that rows together. We are reviewing the Five Dysfunctions of a Team and yesterday I was so proud of our team.  We are discussing each chapter.  We reviewed absence of trust and yesterday talked about fear of conflict.  Lencioni says a team needs to be aware of the charactersitics and dynamics to function at a high level.  So we are learning what to not do and do more of what we are very very good at.  The assessment helps us discover our strengths and weaknesses.  We have virtual assistants on our team too, so that is an interesting dynamic.

If you are interested in discovering if your team is on track, here is an overview with a concise report.  Am I vulnerable, heck yes and I admit to needing help.  Failure is just one more step to success. Yes I need practice and am in a safe place to learn.  We have super mentors like Bob Corcoran, Cutis Johnson, Jay Kinder, Marti Hampton.  We look forward to ever changing fluid nature of teamwork and discovery to continuing to being a great team.

I think the best teams are those where the team members have strengths that complement the weaknesses of other members. If there are too many chiefs, it’s a dysfunctional group. The Beatles come to mind. Eventually they fell apart because there were four very capable singers and songwriters, but not enough room on each album for all of them.
