If Content is King, Why Do We Like Pictures So Much?pictures in posts

So I'm going through all these amazing Wordless Wednesday, Tuesday, Heck! Any day of the week photo posts and am astonished to find almost all of them have dozens of comments! It's just a picture for goodness sake!! Yet, we are all drawn to it!

It doesn't involve any thinking.

It is what it is, I don't have to think about it, I just have to enjoy it and let my mind conjure up it's own description. Why DO we love pictures so much. We are bored as children with books without many pictures yet as adults we still are somewhat tickled by that one picture above the chapter title in certain novels.

We are visual people. As much as we would never be drawn to a picture book of our childhood days we like constructing a scene or visual dynamic of what we are reading to give our imagination more to draw from.

I think that's the way we are made. People say men are visual but yet we all are in a way. We can construct a story so descriptive and so imaginative yet one little picture can make or break the visual for us. Many of you novel readers love to conjure up your own idea of Romeo or the setting and feel disappointed when that scene is not properly staged as was in their mind's eye.

But I still find it interesting that Google and search engines go for content and real info that someone would want to read, it's the pictures that we love so much. It's those images we are drawn back to. What would you rather look at? A page full of text, or broken up by inspiring graphics that help tell the story of what the reader is trying to convey?

graphics in contentYes, we love our pictures. MSN is full of pictures, Yahoo, Cnn, everywhere... we are drawn to the image... the photo... the real capture of the instant emotion. We can sense the feeling, the timeliness, or the intent the author wanted to get across to us.

So how do you optimize your picture? Do sites with lots of pictures rank higher? Surprisingly no. Google still loves the content. If you have a zillion back links to your photo-only site you might be ok, but if not, you need the content.

Use the ALT TAGS to your advantage. If not given the choice for desription in the platform you are using, go to the code and type it between the  " " after alt. Get your info in there. Don't keyword stuff, don't pad and don't be down right silly with the descrtiption but be intentional with how you SEO your graphic IF you want to be. It can really be worth it.

Great post Tammy.  I have a few q's.

1.  How do you create a link on your picture? (e.g. you could create a link back to your website.

2.  Any other ideas on how to optimize the pictures on your website besides alt tags?  For some unknown reason, one of the pictures on my site for santos mahogany gets a ton of hits...and I can see many people coming to my santos mahogany page - a number that is way out of whack vs. the other hardwoods (even braz cherry).  When I did a google search ofr santos mahogany, I see my image coming up.  But, I have no idea what I did "right" to make that happen.  I just put in an alt tag.  Any other suggestions so maybe I can do this w/ some other hardwoods?

Tammy, every image is worth a thousand words in any language. In all my years behind the camera, I have never heard men are more visual than women. I believe all of us have the potential to see and create images from our experience, when we let our imagination roam. This is a good post on the value of pictures.

Tammy, You're right.  I will read even a long post if it has photos or maybe even an interesting colorful font.  But paragraphs and paragraphs of just a plain black font and no photos, is hard to get my interest.

Tammy, yes, there are SEO benefits to proper picture placement as well as links.  But, the best part of it, is relevant and engaging pictures will get people to read the post.  That's still important also.

Jerry - Yes, pictures add so much more appeal to the page.

Debbie - You can simply click on the picture then click the link chain and it will be a link - such a twitter icons and such. On the other one, what has probably happened is someone has technically stolen your picture and instead of saving the image on their computer and re-posting it, they have copied the code of the picture from your site and then used it. So it's kind of like giving you credit but still using your picture. But that creates more interest for your site anyway. If you're going to steal a picture, I guess thats the best way to do it. The Alt Tags, or linking the picture or linking back to it from everywhere else is really the best way to optimize your picture. You can watermark it by adding your website to the background in photoshop or similar program.

Emily - well I have heard the men thing when it comes to  sensual issues! LOL!! But we are all very visual people otherwise God wouldn't have given us eyes that see so much color and wonder! :) So true....

Joyce, I will too. It's the trick with our eyes, even if someone didn't break up the post into paragraphs, our eyes get frustrated trying to keep the place..

Gabe - Very very true!!  :) thanks

Hi Tammy - For me, photos on a web page are essential. I can read endless paragraphs of text in a book, but online, it's just too fatiguing.

I've wondered about the pictures as well. I'm a bit of a train buff. Well, I'm not very knowledgeable but in a small town with about 30 trains passing through daily, I have lots of photos. I don't post these because I don't see how it will benefit anything. The photos are nice, but I don't learn anything from a members only photo post. I seriously doubt anyone from our community will go looking on Google for photos of trains and come across my blog. They can always just look out thier window. I think my blogs will stick to content. :)

Tammy - Great tips, thanks.  You know at some pt, when I have some time, I may experiment w/ this a bit w/ some of my friends sites to see if I can replicate this impact (but in a safe way).

It is tiring Judy! Thats the truth

Jim, I completely see your point... And I think it just comes down to sharing a bit of what you see to others for their enjoyment. There really is no point other than that. Most of us just don't have the time, but then I love what Willie Wonka once said "Oh little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men"  I personally would LOVE to see one of those train photos! :) Have a great day Jim!

Tammy, "a picture is worth a thousand words" yet we still need to add words to pictures. If not, people draw their own conclusions to the picture and it may not be what we want to convey. Pictures grab attention before the text unless the headline stands out and draws you in. In this time strapped society, given the option of looking at listings with/without image, more people are inclined to select with. They want the visual image.

Take your picture of the woman above.  Men and women may react differently to the picture. Now if it was a scantily clad man ---  different reaction. Pictures DO get our attention.

Tammy, in real estate it is critical to helping your seller sell that home.  In our market of second home luxury even more critical that we pay very close attention to our photos, where I live in the North Cascades we are selling the view.  We can not afford to miss one buyer, yet some agents think the phone will do the trick for that photo gallery.  One can not say enough about the importance of photos anywhere but most especially for our home sale success.

Tammy- I am certain you know what works on Google and other search engines, but I think the reason so many of those "Wordless Wednesday" posts get lots of comments is because it is too easy to make a quick effortless comment for the 25 points. Just MHO.
