Someone hit my car...TWICE

By
Home Builder with The Flooring Girl

Yes, you heard me right...someone hit my car TWICE.  Not once, but twice...and while I was sitting in it in a parking lot.

Honestly, some people just shouldn't be allowed to drive.  This is pathetic.

The guy was pretty old...I'm not good with ages, but he was prob. 80-90.  I mean, who hits a parked card and then backs up and hits it again?  I got out of the car and started yelling for him to back up.  I was angry and concerned.  Then, he tries to pull into the space...but I'm blocking it since I didn't want a 3rd hit.

...and then, he beeps me.  Well as I'm sure you can imagine, I start going ballistic at this point.  It's a good thing my mom wasn't there because she would not have believed the language I used or how loud I was.  (I apparently almost scared the guy to death).

the good news was that it was minor - only minor scratches and by a gas station and he got eomeone to fix it and gave me $50 (as well as all of his inf0).

I told him to take an eye test, get glasses and to pls stop driving.  I should have called the police but I was in such a rush to my appt and my car was fine.  My blood was boiling, but that's abt it.

Maybe you shouldn't have stopped him.  Three times is a charm...

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Debbie: - Funny Jay -  very cute! I liked that.  Debbie... I was meeting clients, and while I was parked an older gentleman - and I use the term loosely.. hit the car. my clients were parking and saw the whole thing. I went over to the gentleman, and pointed to the damage. He denied it. I mentioned that I had witnesses, I would takes photos, and let's call the police.. and then he gave me his secretary's name and said he could settle it.. I took his insurance info, etc., etc.. I took the photos. H e was honorable and his secretary sent the check. It turned out he was a big shot at some company (his own) and so he was disdainful throughout... but he was honorable in the end... It bugged me that he was defensive when he was so wrong... $50 hardly pays for anything.. I would have gotten more. What can you fix for $50 ?  ( I got an setiamte for the damage and he sent that amount  - I recall $350 - less than my deuctible so not worth reporting)... The really upsetting aspect was that I was upset, but still took my clients out in my car for 3 hours, carried on as normal.... had taken them out for 2 years... and they ended up buying at an open house in a different area 6 months later..LOL, Gay

Tammy - LOL.  He kept saying to me he got scared.  I was so funny hearing this.  I get I'm a NY girl at heart.

Judy  - agreed.

Jay - LOL, definitely not this time

Gay - Wow, what a story.  In the case the damage was minimal - seriously.  The $50 was for a bit of chipped paint (the gas station guy gave the estimate) but honestly it's not bad at all.  It was more the how much I got riled up...and, it wouldn't have bothered me as much if he just hit once.   (I also had a witness, BTW).

Debbie - as much as some of us may want to admit it, there should probably be a cut off age which you cannot drive beyond much as there is an age you have to be to get a license.  It is a fact that most elderly drivers do not have the reflexes or the eyesight they need to be on the road.  I think you should have called the police and possibly they could have referred him to be retested to see if he is fit to drive.  Let's face it, I would not like that if it were my mom or dad, but I would rather they lose their license than lose their life or take the life of someone else.

Okay first it was about being stopped by the cops, now you are being hit in the parking lot when you are in the car. Ahhh....not such good luck I'd say? At least he didn't deny doing it. I got hit in a parking lot and when the cops came he denied doing it and said I hit him!!! What??? And another time I was at a stoplight and a very old guy suddenly puts his car in reverse and guns it...slamming into the front of my car. Again when the cops came the guy said I rear ended him which does make more sense. I thought I was going to lose it and am getting angry all over again! Ha. The cops could tell the old guy had some issues though so whew.....Okay, I'm done ranting. I'm fine. Glad you are too. :)

Shar - I know, it's crazy.  I think I just spend way too much time in the car.  OMG on your stories.  That's terrible when someone denies it.  Glad he believed you.

It's really sad, but even sadder when he kills someone.  He needs to be off the road.  We are all taking our lives in our hands when we get in our cars today...the texting, the elderly, the stressed out people...scary.

Oh no Debbie!!! I'm sorry to hear that.  I have a dear friend in WA whose dad is 90 and DMV still keeps giving him a license.  My friend is worried he will seriously hurt someone one of these days!

Debbie...my Grandfather drove until he was in his mid 80's. He'd scare me to death. If I saw him driving down the road I made sure I wasn't anywhere near him. I do think that as we get older we should take tests to make sure we still should be on the road!

Yes, you should have called the police. I had someone hit my car a few years ago and me and 5 other witnesses saw this old man hit my car and leave a 1/2 foot deep dent in the side of my parked car in a parking lot. He then just drove off, when the police pulled him over he said he didn't even know he hit anything. They ordered the driving test and now he is no longer driving. Though I think they should have freedoms such as driving, I also think they should have to prove they can do it safely just as a teenager does for their first test.

Todd - You're right.  I should have.  I was flustered and upset and late and i will need to follow up..  I'm so sorry abt what happed to you.  You're right, there should be an age at which you need to have annual or biannual tests.  maybe even a way to raise money for better awareness/safety or something.

Debbie-

I just saw this post now.  Yikes, I can just imagine how annoyed you were (and don't blame you in the least).  At least both you and he were safe and no one was hurt.   There actually is a petition in NY state currently being routed for signatures which would require retesting of elderly drivers..    see - http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/theretestingofelderlydriversinnys/

It has to be one of life's most devastating moments when a person realizes he or she is no longer competent to drive.

When we were living in Arizona we came across a wreck on the freeway - an elderly couple driving in the right lane decided to make a left turn - and drove right in front of a huge truck carrying cars. You couldn't even tell that what they had been driving was a pickup with a camper, it was so flattened.

If only someone had prevented them from driving.

Kathleen - Oh, good to know.  I will check that out.

Marte - Yes, I'm sure it is.  but, they can't do it.  Look at the damage they create - people and cars.

Marte's story is the absolute worst I have ever heard!

That is so scary!  Debbie - Glad you are ok.....  Usually that stuff happens when you are not around, and never know who did it- like a huge gash down the side of my husband's car - never knew where it came from!
