ROSEVILLE RENTERS BEWARE - POTENTIAL CRAIGS LIST SCAM - IDENTITY THEFT
As part of our service to the community, we like to give residents tips and advise in the real estate world. We just became aware if this new ploy to steal away the identities form people wanting to rent homes and use Craig's List.
It is hard to find rentals in this area with so many people losing their homes to foreclosures and short sales. Recovery from a short sale can be 3 years or longer with survival even longer with foreclosures.
I know we often try to help our clients find homes after completing a short sale. It can be competitive with rates now even going higher with homes being rented out within a short period of time.
The scam. Often people posing as landlord will copy pictures from listings and pose as the owners. They will often say they are out of town and once the potential renter fills out an application, they will arrange for a showing of the property. By then it is too late. They already have your information.
Some tips to keep you safe.
- If using an online posting website- meet the person at the home first to view the property. Do not give them any info unless they are a reputable property management company.
- Do a search to make sure the property is not in default. A real estate agent can look that up for you.
- Use a property management company to find you a property. Usually the fee is paid for by the property owners.
Good house hunting!
