Holy Crap! I Think I Broke Twitter!

This morning, as I do every day, I posted a few local Raleigh/ Cary/ Apex area events on Twitter.

But this is what came up on the screen when I refreshed to see my posts....

Oh Crap, I think I broke Twitter!

Oh Crap, I think I broke Twitter!

By the way, if you're not using Twitter to promote your business, you're nuts!

Check out these numbers I put together in a blog some time back. Bear in mind that I wrote this blog last year and the numbers are even better now.

Oh, and if you want to follow me on Twitter, just click the Twitter beaker on my post!

Twitter - Some Interesting Facts & Why You Should Be "Twittering"

Follow me on Twitter!

While running around Cary and Apex, North Carolina with some very excited 1st time buyers today, I received an email from some company trying to sell me followers for my Twitter account. After hitting the delete button, and upon my return home, I decided to do a little research on Twitter...

First I went to Alexa.com, one of the best website ranking tools I've come across, to check out where Twitter ranks on the internet.

I discovered that Twitter is the 13th most visited website in the United States and 14th most visited site in the world. Over 600,000 web pages have a link to Twitter's home page, and there are approximately 17 million Twitter accounts!

But why Tweet? Is it worth it? Will it bring you any business?

At first I was reluctant to even join Twitter. My theory was that if a 12 year old can type in something like, "I made brownies today and they were delicious!", then it's probably not a very effective marketing tool. But I was wrong...

My thought process on the whole Twitter thing changed when some folks who read one of my Real Estate Tweets contacted me. I asked them what it was that caught their attention and they told me they were just searching
around Twitter and one of my ActiveRain localism blogs drew them in! On ActiveRain they read some more of my posts and felt that I should be their Realtor.

In short, yes, Twitter can bring you business! If you don't have a Twitter account, get one. If you do have an account, Tweet daily. You just never know where your next client will come from! Twitter is an excellent way to drive traffic to your website through the networking connections you'll make. Its simplicity makes it easy to post messages to, and there are dozens of free applications available to enhance your Twitter experience.

Below is a chart I made depicting the average age of a Twitter user. Although the average is still quite young, this demographic uses Twitter as a means to connect. Why not give them the opportunity to connect with you? After all, they will be buying a home someday.

The Average Age of a Twitter User

This next chart shows that less than 15% of Twitter users Tweet on a daily basis. Why not be among the 85% who do?

By the way, I'd love it if you followed me on Twitter...AND subscribed to my blog! For those of you who already follow me or are already subscribed to my blog...Thank you!

Thank you!

Debra - This is great stuff you've shared with everyone here. Thank you for doing that. I've already forwarded your Home Stager's guide to one of my friends who can benefit from it. By the way, my grade was an 89. Not bad for someone who just recently got the hang of Twitter, but definitely room to improve.

Rebecca - I did pick up a few subscribers from this post and even more stalkers followers on Twitter.

I've been using Twitter for a while but haven't found much success with it. I don't know how to get more followers. Isn't it like sending your information out to a void if there's no one there to see it? If there's no one there connected to you to see what you send out? How do you get more followers?  I keep hearing "put out good information and people will follow you" but that seems like it's counterproductive.  If you put out good information and you only have 12 people following you, only those 12 people will see what you send out. Is that correct?  So then, how do you get more people following you to see what you send out?  And then, how do you get those people to cross over and connect with you on Facebook and Linked In and MySpace?

Emcee - I'm no authority on the topic, but I've found that if you post items of value (local events, direct links to important local web sites, etc.) the followers will eventually come. When you do post them, if you use the # tag before your key words, people search for tweets with those tags in them. (ie: #Raleigh) By doing that, it turns, in my example, the word Raleigh into a link for all tweets that have Raleigh in them. And, if people do start following you on Twitter, then they'll eventually stop by your other sites to see what you're up to. Like all things though, it takes time to see the results.

Debra - Some folks get really offended when others post links in their blog comments, and I can understand why, but yours was well worth sharing. And the other info was great stuff for those who read this post to learn from. I truly thank you!

Awwwww, we ALL get the "Fail Whale" at least 10 times a month, lol!  I get great traffic to my blogs with Twitter, been using it for a couple years, it's awesome!  You just have to be real good at squeezing a thought into 140 characters or less, lol!

Christine - I do like Twitter for the traffic it sends my way. But, you're so right. Compressing my thoughts into 140 characters is not easy for a guy who has way too much to say!

I'd like your opinion from 2013, are you still twitting? Do you still think it is good for your business?

I have a lot of followers there, but I'm not sure if I need to promote there my business.

Inna - Hi Inna. Yes, I do still tweet. And, yes, I do think it's good for business. Depending on what I tweet, I can see a spike in my web site traffic. It enhances my web presence, it's easy, and, best of all, it's FREE! Is it my only source of marketing? NO! But, it's just another avenue to spread the word on what I do.
