The Ins and Outs of Copywriting
I had the opportunity to attend a marketing conference in Phoenix, Arizona for three days last week called Infusioncon. The conference was completely free and had classes on everything ranging from copywriting and social media marketing to creating landing pages and website home pages that convert. It was such an amazing experience and I have a notebook full of notes I took while attending so I thought I'd share a few with my fellow Active Rainers and anyone else interested.
As I mentioned, one of the classes taught there was on writing copy. Since Active Rain is a massive blogging platform where we all write copy every day, I figured this was a great one to start with. The class was taught by a professional copywriter named Stephanie Fleming (www.stephaniesfleming.com). She has been writing copy for years and had some great tips to share with us.
Did you know that 80% of a person’s decision to keep reading is based on Subject Lines and Headlines? Obviously some people here on Active Rain know this… just take a look at one of the Headlines today that made me laugh: “Stay away from my man, you slut!” by Marian Goetzinger. I couldn’t help but read it with a Headline like that!
Subject lines should:
- Be conversation starters
- Clearly identify the email content
- Include a benefit or pertinent information
- Be short (under 50 charachers)
- Limit the number of SPAM words (can you believe REAL ESTATE in an email subject line can trigger it as SPAM??)
- Always avoid looking like SPAM (this means no exclamation points in the subject line… which I am obviously horrible at!)
Headlines should:
- Call out your target audience exclusively
- Include a benefit
- Add a sense of urgency
- Be specific
I hope that these few tips will help all of you write more appealing and exciting Subject Lines and Headlines for blogs, emails, etc. to help you in marketing your business.
Stay tuned for more posts on all the other great marketing techniques I learned this year at Infusioncon. I will keep them coming!
