If you haven't already registered for Anime Iowa 2011 you probably want to get on it right away. Last year I found out about Anime Iowa totally by accident when hotel rooms in the area became a scarce commodity and clients I was working with had to stay in Cedar Rapids! What will makes things even more interesting this year is that there is a stopover in Coralville on the Ragbrai route the very same weekend in July. Coralville is going to be absolutely hopping the weekend starting July 29, 2011!
Just in case neither Anime Iowa or Ragbrai are on your radar, let me fill you in on some of the details. Anime Iowa is a three day convention that will be held at the Marriott in Coralville again this year. There will be anime screenings, video games and cosplay will play a big roll for Anime Iowa participants too. Cosplay is short for costume play. This is where participants get to dress up as their favorite anime character, often Japanese, although lately American cartoons and sci-fi have influenced Cosplay fans.
Until May 31, 2011 it's possible to register online for Anime Iowa. After that you'll need to take your chances and show up in July at the door. As the convention was at full capacity last year that doesn't seem like the best plan and pre-registering a much safer option.
Moving onto Ragbrai. It's quite funny to be writing about two diametrically different pastimes in the same blog post. Anime is a very technology based pastime. Ragbrai is all about cycling and the outdoors - Quite a different fan base.
Ragbrai is an acronym for Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa. It has been sponsored by the Des Moines Register since 1973 and is an organized, non-competitive bicycle ride across Iowa that draws cyclists from around the US and the World. There are designated stops on the way and this year Coralville is one of them. The stopover in Coralville is on July 29, the same day our Anime friends come to town. Die hard fans have probably already registered for the week long bicycle ride. If not, you're almost out of time as the deadline is April 1st. Day riders have until June 15 to register.
I live in Coralville and am definitely not going anywhere that weekend. I will be out there with my trusty camera on what I am sure will be a truly interesting weekend all round!
