Don't forget the phone!

Whether you are taking a break or a mini vacation, DON'T forget your phone!  I took a small trip up to Galena, Illinois last week and remembered the phone. I didn't want to miss out on any important phone calls. Well, went on a small trip to Dubuque for a riverboat ride and where do you think my phone was? Yes, in the hotel! I missed two calls for future assignments. Of coarse, by the time I called back, the job was already filled.

Word of advice---ATTACH IT TO YOUR HIP!

I will from now on remember that the call can happen at any given time or place. Never leave home without it!

I have a different perspective and very deliberately leave my phone behind on occasion - or at least turn it off.  Why?  Because if I'm on call 24/7, I rapidly become stressed and less effective.  Do I miss an occasional listing/buyer who is too impatient to wait for a call back?  Sure, I do, but I do a better job for the ones that I have, and that hopefully turns into more business in future through referrals and repeat business.

Michele, did you enjoy your boat ride. I am sure that was worth the two calls. Sometimes you just have to let it go and take time for yourself.

Funny, I'm working on leaving my phone behind too. I AM on call 12/7. I love the work but I'm finding I need some breathing space. Tricia is soooo right.

I recently took a trip to the Adirondack Mountains of NY where I had no cell phone coverage for an entire week.  Luckily I knew that in advance, so I left an outgoing voicemail message indicating that I would not have access to voicemail or email while I was gone.  To make sure I didn't miss any potential business, I gave contact information for another agent who was covering my business in my absence.  I also gave my current clients her number and a phone number where they could reach me IN THE EVENT OF A TRUE EMERGENCY.  I'm happy to report that no one needed to use the emergency number, and I did not lose any business during my absence.  By making sure someone else was available to handle calls and issues, I believe I gave my clients a better level of service than I could have done myself remotely.  And I got to really unplug and enjoy my vacation.

Oh, it was definitely worth the two missed calls! I had a wonderful stressfree vacation!  And I am sure the family enjoyed it as well!

In this business you must have some balance or you will burn out fast.
