Unreliable Service People..is this just a Florida thing?

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with BLRGUY(Beach & Luxury Realty Inc)

I lived up in New England about 30 years and I have to tell you,I can not remember having as much trouble having people come to do the work they are contracted for.

Whether it is plumbers, electricians, lawn people, bug exterminators, pool people, handy persons, cleaning people etc....I can not tell you the trouble I have had through the years here in Florida having someone show up and then do the job!

It took me 7 lawn people before I finally found someone who would show up and cut what little grass we have around the office...NO Calls..NO Shows!Just frustrating!

Today,my broker had to go meet a bug man who was going for the 2nd time to kill off the bugs in this foreclosure home we are listing.Well,he came the first time without a problem.....now comes the 2nd time....the house in question is about an hour or so from us with traffic. The Bug guy had scheduled for Friday and my broker showed up...well he gets a call...."I have a flat tire""I won't be able to make it today, can we re-schedule for Monday"? My broker said Ok...well Monday is here and he drove the hour to the property where the Bugman did not show up.Upon calling him,he said"OH I wrote you down for Tuesday...can we do it then"?

All I could say is.....What is up with this? This is typical Florida service people behavior!Does anyone else have any stories they want to share?Tell me it isn't just here!(and mean it..LOL)

BLR:  I don't have that problem here in Pensacola.  The people that I have worked with and or have come in contact with have been very timely, professional, and well informed here in Pensacola Florida

You know, i think there are some local 'cultural' aspects at play.  For example, I just get the feeling that certain parts of Texas aren't nearly as regulated as Arizona (I invest in texas, this has been my experience)...

"Self-employed means you set your own hours .... and only work if & when you want ... however you feel like, and only if you feel like it..( and if its not raining, too sunny, the fish aren't biting, the game's not on, the..)...

...and people will pay whatever you ask..cause they have to...they need your services no matter what!  Competitors? around here- nah,  don't  worry about it "

 EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT!     right guys?

Sorry to say... it's not just the Gulf coast your way...    This has been a complaint around here for YEARS!....not that some aren't acceptable sometimes... BUT...

the irony is, a large percentage of the population are self-employed.... YET not enough motivated apparently  to  positively effect work ethics, supposedly. Educators likely would claim its a lack of training in successful business skills - likely mainly TIME MANAGEMENT.  Some would likely just be happy with a little more honesty and the KEEPING OF YOUR WORD.   I'd even just go for obligatory business card wording:

"Hours of Operation: WHENEVER I FEEL LIKE IT "

rather than all this 'phone answered 24/7' ...sure the voice mail - but the call back can be days, weeks, if ever.....   (maybe the belief  is.. the longer they wait, the busier they appear , and  the longer it is, the more desperate you are and the more that can be charged.)...or maybe that you'll just go away..so they can complain they don't have any business..

some blame it on the sun, the sand, the surf- the fishing and the fun; ..... (not to talk but-  those many pale faces & b.... bellies  don't look much like surfers to me- no offense guys!) and most of their vehicles (if they do arrive) aren't all rust buckets.

Now what gets me is the MASSIVE DIFFERENCES IN  bids (if you get them to bid- have you ever had them not even bother on a multi-thousand dollar little project (their specialty?  or even call back on such a product sale with a price?) ..how many are trying to just make the month or years salary on just one job... guess that way they really don't have to work much of the year.. (nor figure retirees & others don't know going material/labour rates either).. MAKE SURE THEY KNOW you're bidding it out.. as if that matters..

______________________________________________________________________________

GUESS it shows- just because some are SELF-EMPLOYED doesn't mean they have a GOOD BOSS!

______________________________________________________________________________

If the self-employed's boss lets them not  work, rather take much time off,

then how many are really trying  to  FIRE THEMSELVES!

On a positive note, - the public  however has the choice.

You know my thoughts on this...especially when I was the one waiting for the guy! I hope I will someday learn my lesson when trying to get a contractor out to a property.

From living in Florida for 7 years and knowing the area you are from, I would have to agree people down there have the mentallity of living in a "vacation" state and it is terrible. I had the same issues with employees when I was there.

How much of this could be reduced if some effective website, survey- complaint site was openly available?

maybe the competitors would spam the reviews... but enough really mad and aggravated REAL CUSTOMERS would likely share, even give their names.. that the truth might get out...

just a thought- have you 'shared your experiences' enough with your friends, and associates to save them some real headaches...

and referred those few who do.. as they say?

BLR:  I sure wish I could send you some reliable people.  I wonder what is wrong with the folks there?  Maybe, it is like Gary said...........maybe they have too much money and don't need to work.  Whatever happened to being the best at what you do?
