Meep Meep? Or Beep Beep?

This Road Runner showed up on the back fence of our yard here in Carlsbad this afternoon.

Road Runner in our Carlsbad backyard

I always think of the Road Runner as being a desert bird, as we often have seen them in the California desert on our visits. And I think fondly of my fave cartoon character from many years ago. Guess I still enjoy the Road Runner winning out over Wile E. Coyote.

This fellow hung around for quite a while, took some time to preen himmself (or herself?) before hopping down and running across the cul-de-sac to the neighbor's house.

When I moved to Arizona in the late 70's, I was amazed when I first saw a Road Runner.   Of course, that silly cartoon came immediately to mind.

It is "Meep Meep".

Ouch, I actually thhought that Road Runner is just the name of the  company providing broadband. Never even thought that there is a real bird called this.

Great picture. It took me back to visits to my grandparents in Yuma, Arizona where we saw the all the time. I don't think I've seen one in person for a good 30 years.

Ah Jeff ... you gotta love Jon ... in such an innocent comment he says a mouthful:  Sometimes things are so "common" to us and those around us ... we just presume that everyone is on the same page!  Great photo that lead to a powerful insight!  Thanks ...

Hi Jeff,

we are showing our age, where Jon thinks of a broad band, we think beep beep, cartoon time.

Great picture, better memories.

It has been a LONG time since I've seen a roadrunner in person.  Just as long as you don't see a coyote with packages of dynamite I guess everything is alright! :)

Rhonda Patterson, Broker/Owner, Waterfront and Preferred Homes,

BEAUTIFUL! I believe this is the first picture of one I've ever seen, and I've never seen one in person.

We have lots of beautiful birds here along the Gulf Coast of Florida. We consistently see Bald Eagles, Ospreys, Hawks and Roseate Spoonbills in our neighborhood, just to name a few of the many species we see here. Last spring I watched a Great Horned Owl fledge out two babies from a nest she stole from the ospreys. Last night I watched a Hummingbird feed on the Mexican Petunias in our front yard, and I hope it comes back - but not when my Lilly Kitty is outside watching it like she was last night. Bad Kitty - my little huntress.

Thanks for all the comments. It was really fun to see this guy (or gal) hop up on the fence. For those who asked, this critter is about 2 feet long from beak to tip of tail and they really CAN run. But they don't say Meep Meep or Beep Beep, at least from what I can tell.

I loved Jon's comment - I had never seen a Road Runner myself until I moved to the West Coast, but I never even thought of the broadband. LOL
