Why We are Moving Our Domain Name Registrations from GoDaddy

ElephantIn case you haven't seen the video yet or heard the story that was a trending topic on Google, GoDaddy CEO Bob Parsons posted a video from his Twitter account of himself killing an elephant in Zimbabwe.

The video shows the damage elephants caused by trampling a farmer’s field. Bob Parsons and his fellow hunters are shown waiting at night for the elephants to return. Then Parsons shoots and kills one of the elephants. In the next shot, dozens of villagers then come to pick off the elephant’s meat.

With all of Parson's wealth and notoriety, the best cause he can do to help humanity is killing an elephant?

Parsons has defended his actions and states that he believes that the controversy will actually increase sales despite the fact that he has been named the "Scummiest CEO of the Year" by PETA and other animal advocates.

This action comes on the heels of a growing frustration I've had with GoDaddy's service and the increasing difficulty in navigating their site and renewing domain names while trying to avoid all of their add-ons and multiple-year service requests. Even though I was a long-term customer of Go-Daddy and an affiliate that promoted their services on my various websites, I am in the process of moving all 100+ of the domain names that my company owns or manages and will not be making further purchases with this company.

In response, Domain.com has offered a special:

Now through April 7th, use coupon FEEDAFRICA and the first 12 domains you transfer to Domain.com will be $4.99 per domain. We will also donate $1 to Heifer International when you transfer.

Domain.com

After April 7th, you can still transfer for only $6.99 using this coupon:

Make the switch! Transfer your domain for just $6.99* and add a year to your registration

These are magnificent beasts that don't deserve to be ambushed in the middle of the night.  Good for you for getting the word out.

How are the two issues related?  If you are not experiencing good service from GoDaddy, then change; however, the killing of an elephant half-a-world away is something different.  His STUPIDITY is in the video

Thanks Doug, I really debated about whether or not to move my domains, it's a big hassle and is costing some money but I just don't feel right about doing business with GoDaddy any longer.

Lenn - I agree whole heartedly.

Wallace - Bob Parsons is representing himself as not only the CEO but a spokesman on behalf of GoDaddy. If that's how he wants to portray himself and his company, then I choose not to do business with them. To me, this was the last straw after already struggling with the changes they've made to the website to make it more difficult for you to check out without adding multiple years or additional service.

An interesting point from Mediaite

He taped the whole thing as well as footage of the local visitors chopping the elephant’s body up while wearing bright orange “Go Daddy” hats.

I agree with Wallace.  The video is stupid.  The killing of the elephant may have been a neccessity, I don't know, but shooting an elephant is not hunting in my book.

But, at least the people are using the meat and it isn't going to waste.

Monica, I have a couple of address specific websites with GoDaddy.

I agree, we should switch and not patronize the company.

I never liked godaddy to begin with so I don't have any domains with them, but if I did, they would be transferred with the next couple of hours!

Happy Tuesday!
