Father, Forgive Them

Luke 23:34 (GOD’S WORD Translation)

34Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them. They don’t know what they’re doing.”

Meanwhile, the soldiers divided his clothes among themselves by throwing dice.

Jesus knew that we (mankind) remain so blind (crippled) to our sins, that He was teaching us that God is a God of mercy, compassion and grace. God is slow to anger and abounding in love towards us, His creation.

Psalm 103:8 says that "The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.

Just as King David asked...

"Is there anyone left in Saul's family to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan's sake?" 2 Samuel 9:1

We can now eat at the Kings table just like Mephiboshith, even as we are crippled with sin. It is not because we have done or deserve anything, but it is by the grace and kindness of Jesus (Our King)

David and Mephibosheth

1David asked, “Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan’s sake?”

2Now there was a servant of Saul’s household named Ziba. They called him to appear before David, and the king said to him, “Are you Ziba?”

“Your servant,” he replied.

3The king asked, “Is there no one still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show God’s kindness?”

Ziba answered the king, “There is still a son of Jonathan; he is crippled in both feet.”

4“Where is he?” the king asked.

Ziba answered, “He is at the house of Makir son of Ammiel in Lo Debar.”

5So King David had him brought from Lo Debar, from the house of Makir son of Ammiel.

6When Mephibosheth son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came to David, he bowed down to pay him honor.

David said, “Mephibosheth!”

“Your servant,” he replied.

7“Don’t be afraid,” David said to him, “for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table.”

8Mephibosheth bowed down and said, “What is your servant, that you should notice a dead dog like me?”

9Then the king summoned Ziba, Saul’s servant, and said to him, “I have given your master’s grandson everything that belonged to Saul and his family.

10You and your sons and your servants are to farm the land for him and bring in the crops, so that your master’s grandson may be provided for. And Mephibosheth, grandson of your master, will always eat at my table.” (Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.)

11Then Ziba said to the king, “Your servant will do whatever my lord the king commands his servant to do.” So Mephibosheth ate at David’s table like one of the king’s sons.

12Mephibosheth had a young son named Mica, and all the members of Ziba’s household were servants of Mephibosheth.

13
And Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, because he always ate at the king’s table, and he was crippled in both feet.

We find God is waiting for us, ready and eager to forgive us and invite us to His table.

Psalms 23:5-6 You prepare a banquet for me while my enemies watch. You annoint my head with oil. My cup overflows. Certainly, goodness and mercy will stay close to me all the days of my life, and I will remain in the Lord's house for days without end.

Romans 8:34 Who will condemn them? Christ has died, and more importantly, he was brought back to life. Christ has the highest position in heaven. Christ also intercedes for us.

Prayer: Jesus, Thank you that you are still interceding for us even today! Though we are as dead dogs you have noticed us and you are slow to anger, full of compassion, and showing us your kindness by inviting us to eat at your table for days with no end and restore our souls. You make our cup overflow with rejoicing - Amen.

Our Pastor likes to remind us that thankfully and mercifully God has already factored in our stupidity. Another great word for today.

Mephebosheth! Say that real fast 5 times! A whole generation now remembers this man because of the popular song Carried to the Table by Leeland.
