The "ARES" System on Active Rain--Why we Play the Games!!!

I am sure all of us have considered the reasons why we are involved in ActiveRain, and probably more than once or twice. I started out on the blog-site because the material I was writing, and laboring over, was not being read, really by anyone. I thought I had some things to say, and I was looking for an audience to say them to. The Julia Childs movie spoke to me in terms of there being a dialogue between well-informed people out there somewhere, and perhaps ActiveRain was the venue where I could create same.

So, I started writing and writing and writing on ActiveRain and eventually people started to read my stuff and make comments. Along the way, I have developed what I call ARR's (ActiveRain Relationships), and they have worked out well for me. I have people, literally from all over our nation, with whom I have developed a comity, and I see these relationships getting even stronger in the future.

But, then, there was this issue with the points, and my competitive fires were sparked, because for a reason I am not sure I really know, I wanted to be Number One in Boston, Massachusetts. Well, I have been in that position for a while, and I know that being Number One in Massachusetts is out of the question [we have some "whales" who are 400,000 points or so ahead of me, and still going strong].  So,  now I need to get a hold of myself, and figure out why I continue to write stuff, and comment, and stay involved.

I have come up with the concept of ARES, the ActiveRain Engagement System, and it seems to fit. What I am getting from writing and commenting is the ability to engage smart people on many different aspects of our profession.  We can, from time to time, disagree on substance. But, we do not disagree that constructive dialogue is the key to our fulfillment on ActiveRain. We are really point, in some instances, where I know that something I am writing will elicit a constructive comment from one of my ARES "regulars", and I look forward to the discussion.

This brings me to the point of this post. If you are still hooked on accumulating points, and being Number One somewhere in ActiveRain nation, I think you are not getting as much out of ActiveRain as you should. If your comments are banal, or trite, or repetitive, because you know that you can accumulate 250 points a day by doing so, I cannot stop you. On the other hand, it is my belief that your time is better served by writing fewer comments, and giving them some real thought. That is one man's opinion. I know one thing for sure. I have never enjoyed writing more than I do now, and when I am lucky enough to have a post "featured", I feel great. I also feel great when a friend on ActiveRain sends me an email, outside of the blog-site, with a question, comment or referral.  That , to me, is ARES is action, and I am hoping it gets stronger and stronger as the years go by.

I think this post is a fine example of why I find AR therapeutic and educational.  I find it very informational to comment on posts that catch my attention and engage me enough to leave a comment and return the next day to see what comments have followed mine and if a good conversation was enjoyed by all.  To engage in debate is great and I have even had my opinion on subject matter changed due to the conversation.

Don't you just hate it when folks w/o class disagree with a posters view and instead of stating their reasoning why sensibly they get abusive?  Folks like that ruin a good thing.

Elliott, this could not have been said any better than what you did by anyone, myself included. I like that acronym.

My original reasons or intentions were quite innocent and motivated by hope for a better understanding of the new industry I just joined. When I found Active Rain I was so excited about all the free learning I had to join - it took several months before I became a paying member. It was to reach more people who might be interested not in just what I have to say, but to discover the wealth of information other AR members shared too. One reason I like to reblog for my readers. Points are fun, but not the #1 reason for joining.

"I listen for a living." It's all about you.

Elliott, this blog certainly deserves to be a feature and I have hit that button.  From things I have learned here on AR and from my career in marketing and journalism I think you buried your lead.

The lead is the Engagement System and not why you started or what other people are doing.  In all aspects of media you have to catch and keep engagement in the first two lines.  You don't need to set us up, or give us history, that is old school literary practices when people actually read entire articles rather than just skimming.  With the Engagement system as the lead I think you will get more notice.

I have said this before, I think you also need to add a picture to your blogs and not a picture of yourself, but a picture that is pertinent to the blog itself.

For instance a picture of people engaging with one another.  I am a member of flickr and share my images freely in non paid situations using the Creative Commons rights.  I would go to Flickr and put in the word "engagement" in the search term and up would pop hundreds of choices to use. Find one that you like and put it in your unpaid media here and then link the image back to your flickr so the photographer shares in the activity.  I know this will engage more people.  IMHO.  If you need help with this technology, give me a call I would be happy to walk you through the process.

Ok, my feedback:

No one knows what ARES means.  I'm not very good at marketing, but I have learned one thing:  you have to get them to open the email or post, and the subject is what achieves that.

Then I sort of realized that ARES was something you wanted to initiate, or at least I guess you did, but it wasn't clear what you were suggested we do, other than "Don't bother with automatic vanilla comments."

I also didn't understand this sentence: "We are really point, in some instances, where I know that something I am writing will elicit a constructive comment from one of my ARES "regulars", and I look forward to the discussion."

So I don't know that this is helpful.  But I will say this:

It's because of you that I've increased my activity on AR, but not for points, but because AR gets indexed much faster than my own website, for sure.  And faster than Bigger Pockets, which is actually more to my target audience.  But it seems to be increasing my organic google listing a little.

And increasing my activity on AR and my comments seems to get me more noticed, which seemed to get me my features, which seems to get my rankings in google higher.

And I will admit to being pleased with comments and features.  So thank you, Elliott, even if I didn't comment earlier on this post!
