What Your Email Provider With Profiling Says About YOU

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty 0575737

I ran across a fascinating article from Hunch in the news, never heard of them, but apparently they did web research on its users of web applications on the characteristics of the senders of email from the four main web mail providers (Gmail, AOL, Yahoo and Hotmail). It is kind of like criminal profiling by police where they say depending on which service you use they can tell who you are.

Don't take offense if you don't fit the EXACT profile, I am just the messenger here, and remember they are averaging ALL the users of one service down to a single profile. Just look at the trending. For what it's worth....

  • Email Logo 1Women
  • Ages between 35-64
  • Probably overweight (how do they know that??? LOL)
  • Education - high school diploma
  • Spiritual but not religious
  • Political - Moderate
  • Romantic relationship more than ten years
  • No children
  • Surburbanite
  • Travel a lot but NOT outside the country
  • Priority for them is the family (with no children??)
  • Read magazines, have a computer (duh)
  • Listen to radio and watch a lot of television
  • Extroverted
  • Optimistic
  • Like to work and be part of a team

Email Logo 2

  • Younger people ages 18-34
  • Mostly men, thin men
  • University education
  • Not religious, agnostic
  • Politics toward the left
  • City dwellers
  • No children (ha ha maybe this computer thing is bad socially)
  • Also travel a lot
  • Minimum five countries visited by all these users
  • Most interested in their "career"
  • Tech savvy, know the web well, read blogs, probably have iPhone
  • Use laptop computers and listen to MP3 musci
  • Dress is casual, jeans and t-shirts
  • Introverted
  • Partial to salty snacks

Email Logo 3

  • Young women age 18-34
  • Medium build
  • High school diploma
  • Not religious
  • Politics - do not care much about that but are moderates
  • Again single, and childless (Ha Ha I am seeing a correlation with too much emailing)
  • Another suburban dweller, but now live with parents
  • Love to travel
  • Read magazines
  • Also have laptops and listen to MP3 music
  • Pessimistic of the bunch (probably has to do with aligning with Microsoft and all the bugs that company puts in the software)
  • Introverted
  • Loves teamwork

Email Logo 4

  • Another older group from 18 but ranging to 49
  • Tend to be overweight women (remember this is an average)
  • High school diploma
  • Not religious but interested in defining spirituality
  • As far as their political leanings, moderate
  • Are in a loving relationship
  • This group has kids
  • They live in the suburbs OR rural areas
  • Have not traveled outside the country
  • Family is priority (at least that makes sense with the children part)
  • Types of magazines they read - Entertainment
  • Have a computer, listen to the radio, and play music off CDs
  • They watch a lot of television
  • Outgoing
  • Enjoy working in teams
  • They like sweets (maybe accounts for the overweight part)

So the Gmailers are the techie types, the Yahoo ones are the ones with sweet tooths. The AOL crowd seems to have been the oldest crowd. I find it interesting that any organization has time on their hands like this to do this study. And WHAT IF you use multiple providers? Do you have a split personality? If you use none of these email systems I guess you are just extremely individualistic and fly under the radar from the masses.

But if you think of email with all the time you spend on it, less than breathing but probably more than eating Hunch might just be on to something with their profiling. At least it's a hunch. LOL.

Gary-Nobody fits perfectly into one mold. We are all a combination of unique and indivually developed molds. I think profiling is OK but it isn't absolute.

Neat stats Gary.  I really think that as a professional we need to have our own domains/email.  I use all the above (except never had an AOL account) for other "stuff" but not for business.  This probably sounds bad but when I am in a co-broke with an agent with an AOL email I immediately think they aren't very tech savvy...  What do you think?

Suzanne: Just some basic trends to be aware of from an organization that looked into this.

Hella: AOL people are the loyal ones you are right.

Steve: Great detailed comment and many agents use their company domain.

Holly: The Gmail does have the younger demographic with as popular as Google is.

Kim: You are a scary four part personality Ha Ha.

Elizabeth: AOL does seem like so early 1990's I agree. I don't see it as much with agents, but many consumers.

Petra: I know many people have all three or four. Nothing wrong with that. They say to forward all your email to one place so you don't have to go fetch it many places.

Sharon: You are right with profiling, it is just some trends someone picked out.

Pamela: I like personalized email addresses if you can set them up but many agents I know are on yahoo and gmail as their standard ones, so I don't really mind. They work.

Gary,

I fit the AOL prototype and Cherise fits the gmail.  Nonetheless, I gave up AOL a long time ago.  We personalize our own emails and have gmail for other things like youtube, MAC computers, etc... g

Hi Gary, there are only a few people I know on AOL, my mom being one- so I guess she fits!  It's an interesting study, I have MSN...now I probably have to get G-Mail so I'll be cool :-)

I see to be a cross between Yahoo and Gmail. . .I have accounts on both.  Although I primarily use Yahoo.  I had to laugh at the age ranges though. . .I surpass age on ALL email services:-)

I do believe they are totally dreaming.  When I look at the info that I have on different users of these various programs, the stats missed it big time. . .  but then it still makes interesting reading.. :)

Good evening Gary,

Interesting post. I believe like Sharon no one fits perfectly into a mold! AOL does seem to be the least used or maybe those that  just started there and aren't changing!

Hi Gary, well I have to admit that I"ve had a Yahoo account for way more years than I can count.  However, I am certainly not their average user.

This is hilarous.  I tend to attach images to clients so I remember their email address.  Once I had a divorcing couple, where he had left her.  His was @hotmail.com - I remembered that one easily.  Mr. Hotpants.  Another client travelled a lot . He was sbcglobal.net.  Who would have thought thre actually are stereotypes to that!
