New supper club The Astoria Room goes glam with 1940s-style decor.
Walking by a brilliant chandelier and dark peacock-print wallpaper in Astoria's latest hot spot is like going back in time.
And that's precisely the mood that the team behind The Astor Room wants to evoke.
The 1940s-style supper club is housed at Kaufman Astoria Studios' former commissary, where movie legends such as Rudolph Valentino once grabbed bites between takes. The Astor Room opened for dinner on Feb. 10.
"We want to bring a little bit of Hollywood to Astoria," said owner Christopher Vlacich, 39, of Oyster Bay, L.I. "I want people to feel like a million bucks when they walk in."
Vlacich learned the ropes in the hospitality business from the ground up - washing dishes at his family's Italian restaurant in Astoria. He then worked his way up the ladder to a manager at Piccola Venezia, a favorite of the Kaufman execs.
The studio opened in 1920 and became home to Paramount Pictures. It became the Army's pictorial center during World War II until the early 1970s, Rosenbluth said. Kaufman Astoria snapped up the studio in 1980.
"It's bringing an upscale vibe and an upscale dining and drinking establishment to a burgeoning nightlife scene,"
