If The Government Wants To Shut Down, That's Fine With Us
Shut it down! Shut it down! Shut it down! Shut it down! Shut it down! Shut it down! Shut it down! Shut it down!
Am I making myself clear?
For 6 months, the President, two Speakers of the House, Harry Reid, the tail end of the 111th Congress, and the beginning of the 112th Congress have known that we did not have an FY 2011 budget for the country.
In the lame duck session where everything and anything was up for quick passage, the budget was not even considered.
Congress - at least the Democratic members - were content to support and pass a series of Continuing Resolutions to keep funding the government 3 weeks at a time. Would could blame them? No one wants to have it said of them that they voted to pass this monster spending package. But, the flip side is that not enough have had the courage to defeat it and send it back to the White House for a do-over.
So here we are at the 11th hour again. Fortunately the new Republican members of the House have agreed on $31 billion in cuts - a far cry from the $100 billion they campaigned on. Apparently the Speaker wants $40 billion in cuts - somewhat better.
The White House and the Democrats have essentially agreed to the $31 billion in cuts but not to the point of actually passing any legislation to that effect.
Midnight Friday, the doors are locked and the lights are turned off. That's fine. If Washington doesn't want to govern - as demonstrated by their actions - or rather lack of them - they can just shut down. Maybe they can reopen in the fall. This is a great way to say the country money.
Actually the shutdown - if it comes - shouldn't be more than a few days. The Republican members of the House have been advised to stay in town over the forced recess.
Both sides will try to blame the other, but this clearly is more squarely on the Democrats who should have passed it last fall and the those who are remaining obstructionists by dragging their feet on cuts.
The cries that children are going to die unless the USAID retains its funding and that seniors are going to be hurt are just to scare us into pushing for yetr another Continuing Resolution.
Unless the work stoppage continues well into next month, no seniors will be affected at all, and only then people who need to enroll into Medicare or Social Security.
Whatever it takes for the spending cuts is great. If its a furlough, fine. Maybe we'll pick up some accelerated attrition that way as well.
