I just received my cell phone bill today and saw a new charge for $9.99 on one of my sons phones. I have experieced "surprises" on his account before so I asked him about the service called "The Vault" that he had subscribed to.
I went online to research what my teenager had gotten into this time and found a number of negative posts about that company for billing people that never signed up. When my son came home from school, I asked him about it. At first he didn't recognize it and then he realized it was a service that had "texted" him that he thought he had ignored.
I had him join me in my office when I called Sprint to learn more about that service. The customer service rep at Sprint was great and he has obviously dealt with this issue before since his first response was "Oh, Vault!".
It turns out that that company sends you text messages. If you don't "opt out" it is legal for them to start billing you. Even the Sprint Customer Service rep mentioned he thought that service should be illegal!
I have told my children to ignore spam emails and texts because clicking them sometimes confirms your account. Now, ignoring them appear to have the same effect.
With over 1.2 million Realtors out there; I would assume at least 1 million have cell phones. Maybe it is time that we get pro-active and have our Government Affairs Directors work with the lawmakers in Washington, DC about putting an end to this practice?
Maybe they forgot to check their cell phone bills and that is yet another reason our country is trillion dollars in debt and can't pass the federal budget since they don't know how to control these fees either!
