Where the Buffalo Roam in Connecticut . . . Sunday Photos

When our country was young, Buffalo roamed the western plains in very large herds. They were the primary source of food for the Indians and their hide were prized and collected to make fashionable coats and hats.

They were almost hunted out of existence. It was quite a surprise to me recently to be driving along a road and see a couple of buffalo just grazing in a pasture here in Connecticut.

These 2 didn't have a care in the world, and they were just content to wander the meadow and chew up some of the early sprouting grass.

Central Connecticut was never considered one of the open plains where the buffalo roamed, but on this day they were just fine.

Yes, I'd say that is unusual to see Buffalo in CT.  How interesting.

Nice!  We have a buffalo farm near our home.  Always have to pull over and watch them for a moment for my little girl.

Hey Ed, Great to look at easy to raise and very very lean meat. I don't have any "bison" available here but in Michigan we did. It was a very good lean meat. Great pic's of the "herd".

Deb, I had to do a double take, then as I had the camera stopped to get these shots

Andrew, I have never had buffalo meat, but many buffalo wings

Laura, they are a bit unusual. I have seen them on a farm out towards the western end of the state in Woodbury, and they also had ostrich in the same field.

Barbara, we have lots of cows in the state, some big dary farms in fact. Andrea is in cow country, or maybe it's cow heaven over in her area.

Thanks, Clint, and yes they are also called Bison, or American Buffalo

Fran, they were on East St, Rt 217 in Middletown not far from I-91

Juli, not your every day pet for sure

Ken, couldn't tell you that I don't eat a lot of red meat

Hi Ed - How cool is that! I've seen buffalo in Massachusetts, and I've read about people starting to have herds of them - however small. Some of the people who have them are doing this to make sure they don't go extinct. It's a preety awesome sight to pull over and see them grazing. Thanks for the great photos!

Ed, We have a few at a nearby ranch and they are pretty docile. I collect buffalo nickels and love the nobleness that a buffalo exhibits.

Ed I have seen buffalo in the zoo before but I don't think that I have ever seen any out on a open field.

It's always nice to know that only a short ride from our bustling cities are scenes like the ones you shared with us here. Such a great country we live in.
