"Monsters in the Blogosphere!" - Blog Tips for Rain Drips

Real Estate Agent with Fathom Realty West Sound WA State 52404

A while back, I wrote a fun, somewhat comical, somewhat serious, piece entitled, "Armchair Quarterbacks in the Blogosphere." It was written in response to an encounter I had with someone who had commented rather maliciously to an article I published on my 'other' blog, SOUNDBITEBLOG.

If done well, conversational blogging should foster good, impassioned debate, and the healthy exchange of ideas/opinions.

Unfortunately, all too many times, people use blogs as a battleground in which to assert their egos and to showcase their obviously superior intelligence. Or, if nothing else, to dazzle us with an expanded vocabulary.

The greater blogosphere has become a breeding ground for verbal thugs and self-proclaimed, self-pontificating experts who publicly eviscerate anyone whose opinion differs from their own.

And whenever challenged, they vehemently deny any wrongdoing. They innocently claim that their character assault against you wasn't intended to be 'personal.' That's just their 'style' of writing.

"Please, Mr. Blogenstein, don't hide behind the false premise of simply expressing your viewpoints, or claiming your 1st Amendment rights. Let's face it, your comments aren't designed and expressed to stimulate thought and encourage meaningful debate. You're just simply much smarter than everyone else, as you're condescending comments clearly prove."

Many years ago, in a previous life, I worked with a guy who genuinely believed he was the world's smartest man. He also felt that it was his penance in life to deal with everyone else's stupidity (His exact words!) Can you imagine going on a sales road-trip and being stuck in a car for hours on end with someone like this?

Adam Waldman of RE/MAX Long Island expressed a similar disdain in his recent article, "The Power to Delete." How sad that we are relegated to monitoring our blogs like yard-duty teachers, making sure that the playground bully isn't harassing our visitors!

Personally, the only effective tool that I've found to combat such Blog Monsters is to hit the 'IGNORE' button. Typically, any attempt to engage these kind of individuals in reasonable civil discussion is like expecting Brittany Spears to become a responsible adult.

If only we could summon up the mob of torch-bearing villagers and set fire to the Blog Monster's castle.

Oh well. He'll just come back like a low-budget sequel and terrorize the townspeople once again!

Tell me about it. I commented on a blog by Keith and Robin Perry and since my viewpoint was different, I was under personal attack.  Many times in a spirited debate, when one does not have any factual information to back up their claims, they resort to personal attacks.  The attack wasn't just against me.  It was against anyone who's view differed from their own.

Good Luck and Keep on blogging.

In the immortal words of Mark Twain (or was it Will Rogers?),  'Better to be thought a fool, than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.'  Which has particular relevancy in the blogosphere.  But then, think how boring it might be without the jacklegs among us.

Leigh - so true. There never would have been inspiration for this article!

Bill - those of us in this business tend to be very passionate about what we do, especially as it relates to relentlessly representing our client's best interests. I read through the post you referenced. I don't think that Keith or Robin were 'attacking' you personally. You all obviously had a difference of opinion and interpretation of what constitutes Fair Housing Law. But I didn't sense any malicious attacks taking place. We can be civil and respectfully agree to disagree.

Hi Rich,

O.K., now tell us how you really feel!  This post is a regular pisser, especially in view of the fact that Halloween is just around the corner.  Very humorous and well written, not to mention illustrated.  Loved it and you "Know" how I feel about such individuals in the blogesphere as well as our profession!

Excellent topic, although I am pretty sure I have also been in the presence of someone who thought they were the world's smartest person for long periods of time, however, sometimes ignoring them seems to make them want recognition for their title even more! The beauty is you can ignore people in the blogosphere, that you can't ignore while trapped in a vehicle for hours with them :)

You wrote this so eloquently although to the point (I did have to go look up a couple of those words and if I didn't read further I was starting to wonder where disembowel came in haha). At times, I thought it was my ignorance of the blogging world .... and that the debating thing was "normal". I have learned it's not.

I'm a slow started but I'm starting to get people I know to start blogging. The first thing I tell them is you can't believe everything you read. This is unregulated stuff, good stuff, just don't take everything you read as Gospel.

I loved Young Frankenstein. AMC ran it a couple of weeks ago with notes on the bottom of the screen. I highly recommend watching it again. Nothing else out there is as funny.

Good points and excellent graphics. Like the idea of the measure of a good post is whether it stimulates thought and encourages meaningful debate. Going to keep that in the back of our heads from now on.

How's Peyton Luke today?

Hi Rich, Hello Gary. Not be the smarta-- guy but all posts that are good don't have to encourage debate, sometimes they can be superb and just be totally benign. Ask Sally. In her group, there are some pretty amazing things written, some bring tears, some bring laughter while other just sooth the soul. About the most debate they cause is it trying to find the right words to say " I understand".

Now that I got my 2 cents in Rich, Your post is a superb example of " truth in humor ". Gary, I was trying to get your attention, you write some wonderful things. I love your format for your localism posts.

So my initial words here were just to get some attention, lol, nothing more argumentative than that. :-)

I actually totally agree ( wimped out again, lol) with both of you.

William - I agree wholewheartidly. I chose the term "Conversational" blogging specifically, not simply blogging in general. It should always invoke discussion, stimulate thought, etc.. But a blog article can be well written and gain huge readership without need for debate or discussion.

You have an ignore button.  I've been looking all over my keyboard and can't find one!  Do I have to hold the function button down?

Seriously, I NEED an ignore button.

Rich, have you been poaching in my profile again???

Seriously, I wonder sometimes if the monsters are really just in our minds.  We, as authors, can move forward undaunted by even the worst offender in the blogosphere.  We can create and then recreate ourselves using only the limits of imagination.  Where's the downside to that?  As Adam pointed out well, the delete button is a useful tool we should sharpen as needed.  No worries...we are in a business-specific mini-sphere where the thuggery is decidedly muted.  Try going to a religious or (worse yet) political blog and read the comments.  Ouch!  After immersing myself in that environment I'm ready to giggle at the "thugs" here on AR.

Delete!  Move On!

I agree with Rebecca ! It's amazing how someone will hide behind the keyboard but when push comes to shove...they will place nicey nice to your face and pretend you are the next best thing since sliced bread ! I have also learned to "ignore" but yet rant in my own time in my own space...whatever works..right
