Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff

By
Home Builder with Owners' Ace

A few years ago, my mom gave me Richard Carlson's book, Don't Sweat the Small Stuff - and It's All Small Stuff.  It's a famous book, which you've likely heard and read yourself.  In it he said, "Often we allow ourselves to get all worked up about things that, upon closer examination, aren't really that big a deal..."

Great advice for life and although I'm still trying to make it work in my daily personal routine, it's especially important during the homebuilding process.  From my experience, the vast majority of people who choose to build a custom home have come to that point because they can't find an existing home that meets all of their requirements, so by nature these are often very detail oriented people.  What I can assure anyone who is considering building a new home is that there is going to be a lot of small stuff during the building of your home.

People who frequently call our office worrying about minor things make the building process much more stressful and difficult on both themselves and the builder.  A homeowner who worries and consistently calls when a subcontractor is a couple of hours late, or needs to know why a hole is cut in a two by four, or notices some sawdust in a tub can cause delays and make the process unpleasant.  Don't misinterpret this.  It's very important for a homeowner to call when they see something that is of concern, but when everything is a "big deal", it can become counterproductive.

It's important to know that if you're going to sweat the small stuff (and remember it's all small stuff), it often will not help you get what you really want.  Remember that as a homebuilder, I have the same goal as you, the homeowner.  We both want a quality, custom home completed on time and on budget.

So please relax and do yourself a favor: Don't sweat the small stuff - Let us do that for you.
