The Benefits of Networking Within an Association or CommunityNo Gravatar

In my last post, I spoke about the benefits of joining a business association, such as the Stone Oak Business Association. Today, I want to discuss the benefits of networking within an association or community.

Are you a business owner? Partner? Marketing rep? Salesperson?

If so, you probably realize networking is one of the best marketing tools you can practice. Supporting one another is what helps businesses grow within the community. The more people you know, the more supporters you gain for your business. People are generally good at heart and WANT to see others succeed, or - even better - to be a part of their success! When someone gets to know you - the business owner - personally, they become a part of your support system.

By attending networking events, you are taking steps towards improving your business. You have the opportunity to meet new contacts, discover leads, and learn new skills or better ways of doing business. Effective networking means getting to know people who will do business with you, or who will refer business your way.

Nothing beats meeting someone face-to-face when networking. Don't be afraid to introduce yourself, give a brief summary of what you do, and then give the other person an opportunity to speak and ask questions. Be a good listener and see how you can best serve them. (Check out a few tips from Rick Salas HERE about being a good listener.) Once you offer to help them out, they will likely want to return the favor. It is this type of reciprocal relationship that helps build strong businesses, one person at a time.

After you've met someone, keep in touch! Try not to drop the business card in the Rolodex and forget about it; instead, follow up with that person. Send an email or make a phone call telling them you enjoyed meeting them, invite them to upcoming business or social functions, or just check in periodically to say hi. Also - try to become a good resource for others. When someone needs an idea, a referral, or even just a suggestion - you want to be the person they turn to. That will keep your name fresh in their mind.

Don't get stuck in the rut of going to networking events and speaking to the same people over and over again. It's easy to develop "favorites", but the whole point of networking is to branch out and introduce yourself and your company to new faces. At the same time, it isn't necessary to get to know everyone you encounter. Focus on making quality connections. Seek out individuals who will be able to help your company grow and prosper.

Remember, YOU are responsible for your own success - so go out there and make the connections you need in order for your business to grow and prosper!

Stay tuned for my next blog post, which will discuss ways the Stone Oak Business Association actively participates in community events and fundraisers - and ways you can, too. One of the best ways to network is to become involved in your community! Until then, if you're planning to attend A Taste of the Northside next Wednesday (April 13th, 2011), please look for me (and the Stone Oak Business Association). I'd love to meet you!
