My Spring Garden

gardeningIt's that time of year, people.  Time to get your spring garden in order if you're willing.  This year, my husband and I have been toying with the idea of actually starting one up.  It's in an effort to be healthier to our waistlines as well as our pocketbooks, since groceries are getting so high.  I'm not sure what to plant, though.  Does anyone have any suggestions on what is good to plant for newbies, such as myself and tips on how to keep up a small household garden?  I'd love to hear from you.

Heather... I call myself a "pot" gardener although my husband prefers "container" since he's in law enforcement.

I plant bell peppers, herbs, tomatoes, cucumbers, egg plants and hot peppers.  I grow them on my deck.  In my yard deer would eat my plants where I live.  I love fresh tomatoes and I also put some blanched and peeled into my freezer each summer and use them for sauces and soups in winter.  And I have a great easy bread and butter pickle recipe if you like those.

It's also a good idea to "trade" with neighbors who might also garden and grow something different.  I traded pickles for okra with one of my neighbors last summer.

We had great luck with raised garden beds last summer and are adding to our garden this spring... for ideas: http://www.raisedgardenbeds.com/Garden%20plans-2.htm  I did not buy from them, but they were an insiration for a unique design.

Tomatoes ended up taller than me by a bunch.. we had good luck with egg plants and peppers as well. Also herbs did really well too,

this year we are adding beans, mellons, a second run at squash, Cucumbers etc...garden

Heather,

Are you looking for flowers or veggies?  And if veggies, organic?  If you need any recipes for those "home-grown" veggies - I can help you out with that.

Happy planting!

Mindy

Hi Heather, As a former Master Gardener, I am familiar with this nationwide organization. It is usually aligned with a local university, and whose mission statement is to assist the home gardeners with sustainable, environmental practices. They usually have a free helpline for questions. It is a good place to find out what works best in your area, since not all things work best in each area.

The link for your area, I think, is: http://www.extension.uidaho.edu/idahogardens/fvh/vegetables.htm

Heather, good for you! we joined a CSA this year. I knew I wouldn't have time for gardening but didn't want to give up the fresh veggies.
