Eyeores Birthday 2011 will take its annual place in Pease Park in downtown Austin on the last Saturday in April. In a city that is losing many of its beloved traditions, Eyeores Birthday is one of the few Austin institutions that isn't going away. Eyeores Birthday is an all day, outdoor festival, that celebrates the character Eyeore of Winnie The Pooh with music, food and drink that benefits local non-profits. Many attendees wear costumes, while some choose to wear, well, not much.
Austin's population has exploded over the last twenty years. But Eyeore's is a bit of a reunion for old Austinites, and a peak at a city from years gone by, for new residents. Aquafest is gone, South By Southwest has gone from a festival to a national event, but Eyeores Birthday still is Eyeores. People bring dogs, some bring their children, others play games (the biggest egg toss you'll ever see), many participate in the infamous drum circles, and some of us just watch all the activity. All this takes place, on what is arguably the best weather day of the year in our fair city. Spring has set in, and the dog days of summer are several week away.
The day begins at 11 am, and the bands began at 12. This years lineup include The Bandulus, Scorpio Rising, The Johnson Brothers and Rattletree. Eyeores is still free. And the party goes until dark. In a city that seemingly changes by the minute, Eyeores Birthday Party is truly a one of a kind Austin event.
