Retire in Atlanta; why not?

Why would anyone want to retire in Atlanta?  I just read an article that listed the top five cities for comfortable retirement and they were all in the upper midwest! Let's see; cold weather, snow, high heating bills, extra clothing allowance for underwear and coats, snow tires..... and the list continues!

Who in the world would seriously WANT to retire in Cleveland, Indianapolis, or Detroit?

In all fairness to the columnist, the article was slanted toward "inexpensive home prices".... which stated makes up the greatest expenditure for retirees. But let's be serious; would anyone honestly want to retire where the only water view is of a frozen pond?

Speaking of water views; try getting an inexpensive homeowner's insurance policy for your retirement house on the Gulf Coast or East Coast of Florida!

That's why I suggest that those considering retirement, consider Atlanta:

  • Great weather.... you can walk outside almost 360 days a year without falling on the ice.
  • Relatively inexpensive housing and a lot of it less than 30 years old!
  • Heat bills for about 3 months of the year, not 7!
  • No need for heavy winter coats, snow tires, snow shovels, radiator heaters for your car or boots.
  • We are only 5 hours to either the Atlantic Coast or the Gulf Coast.
  • We are only 40 minutes to the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
  • A number of Golf Courses, Lakes and other affordable amenities surround the area.

All kidding aside, Atlanta is a strong location for retirement consideration and the metro area is starting to feel that trend. Affordable housing options, lower cost of living, less expensive homeowner's insurance, milder climate and lots of opportunity for socializing; 365 days a year!

I have helped a number of retirees moving to the area, and a number of empty-nesters downsize into a more comfortable and manageable home.  Please feel free to contact me with questions about this alternative location; Atlanta, Georgia for retirement!
