She said angrily to me, "Well, I've been in Real Estate for 35 years, and I am right... !!!"

butlerHow many of us have had that line said to us?

Really?  I mean really?  She said this with such authority; I almost went into the kitchen and grabbed a silver plate to serve her tea and crumpets...  And then ask if she needed anything else with a horrible accent only to scamper back into the butler's pantry to wait until I was beckoned forth again...  She said it is if that one line, "35 years" normally shut up anyone that ever got in her way, or on her way to the top of whatever throne she was master over...  Oh, then she also said, "This is how we have always done it, and that since I was new to the business, I might not know enough yet".  I have the vision of a white gloved hand putting something in a purse, and patting it after it was in there, for safe keeping...  Not sure if it really pertains to the story, but that is the image...  LOL!

I have 160 or so agents that work for me, and I help field all types of questions on a daily basis...  I have heard it all, seen it all and still get surprised on some days.  I have overseen hundreds if not thousands of transactions and have been in the business since the early 90's.  But I do not have an ego, so I never care about challenging the old, "who-knows-more-then-who or who-been-in-the-business-longer-than-who" game that is played sometimes.  And I do not ever assume that I know everything.  I often have to get our attorney on the line to help me out with the situations that become rather complicated.

.This leads me to this thought...  Time to time, I get the line about how long someone has been in real estate when in a disagreement over a transaction...  And for that reason, it seems that the person saying it to me thinks I should bow down, and accept their rationale that why they are doing is right (since the length of time in the biz was long), and what I propose to do is wrong.  Usually they are never interested about my thoughts or what direction I feel we should take.  And if I broach the subject, it usually ends in the other party getting angry, while I smile...  Not at them, just to remind myself it is not worth getting angry about something so trivial.

Now this is rather unscientific thought process by the way, just the random thoughts of an AR'er

Almost every time I hear this line...  "35 years, or whatever length of time..." (When in a disagreement)  The person saying it seems to be reluctant to accept that they are wrong, and do not want to own up to the fact that the decisions that THEY made may have been made in error, and can cause damages...  They do not want to be the one who made a mistake, so they try to rationale their length in the business over others technically correct solutions to the same problem.  I also seem to see that those that fall back on their length of time in the business as their SOLE agreement as to whether they are correct or incorrect, are the same people that are not learning based.  They do not want to see that the world is changing, or may not be interested in seeing what is around the next bend.

Now, I do not have any negative feelings towards those that have been in the business for a great length in time.  This post is not about our veteran super-stars..  I in fact respect them.  This post is just about the argument starters, that really do not want to debate, they just want to tell...

So next time you are in a disagreement and want to tell someone how long you have been in the business...  Do it with a smile, and I bet it will go further!  We need you to impart your wisdom on the next generation of agents that are jumping in.  Whether you like it or not, people look up to you, admire you, and are copying your every more on their journey to stardom!

:) Have a great day!

Oh ya, I like this line. I usually make them repeat it by reflection to they can hear themselves say it. "You say what? 35 years? Really? Dang..."

"Well, as you know (and I know they don't or they are wrong).... they will never argue with you about they really don't know, when you already make the statement that they know (should know).

Exceptional post.

It is amazing how many people have held a real estate license for a long long time.

I recently heard something similar when an agent wrote "Carpet allowance" on a contract.  I explained that it had not been allowed for at least the last three years and asked how many transactions they were involved in over the past couple years.

It seems we have these type of experienced people in any business. I am blessed to be working with a few 35+ years experienced agents who are more than willing to learn from me as I am to sit and listen to their experiences. But we have all encountered the "I am better than you because I have lived longer" people as well. Having spent some time in education, schools have the same experienced teachers who aren't willing to learn to new techniques. Just because you are an OLD teacher, doesn't mean that new 1-2yr teacher isn't better in the classroom than you. Great post! :)

A couple of years ago, I offered an agent a daily or weekly email from me that covered the latest developments in the mortgage and real estate industries.  He snarled that "35 years" thing and told me in no uncertain terms that he knew everything there was to know about the business.  Like you, Chris, I had to bite my tongue.  This agent had been subject to disciplinary action by the State and was working on a Restricted license.  Perhaps the one thing he DID NOT know about the business was how to stay out of trouble with the State!

Ah yes, I have been the recipient of this one a couple of times.  It has always ended badly for the 35 year vet, lol.

Chris - Although being in the business longer, generally means more knowledge, this is not always true.  Also, things are always changing, and we need to keep up on them.

Chris,

What is this?  Pick on the veteran post? Aren't you doing the same thing as the 35-year veteran when you say: "I have 160 or so agents that work for me, ... I have heard it all, seen it all...I have overseen hundreds if not thousands of transactions?"  It sounds like the same argument to me.  I'm right, you're wrong, sit down and be quiet.

The issue is arrogance, not years of experience.  I'd be very interested in hearing the details about what set off her arrogant rant.

Personally, I learned tons by listening to and watching veterans, and I think surviving 35 years in a 100% commission environment is a big deal. I'm still learning from veterans and newbies.

William (#7) says: "back when they started, there was little camaraderie among agents".  Really?  My recollection  is there was a lot more camaraderie in 1976 than in 2011.  Perhaps Santa Clara county is different from San Diego in that respect.

Well done Chris is stimulating an active discussion.

Well said Chris, times 'a' changing and agents have to keep up whether in the business 35 years, 53 years or yesterday.

Chris ~ I believe the length of time in the business doesn't always mean much.  Many new agents understand things better because a vetran agent is stuck on how things used to be done.

I am usually not as polite. I have had this in the past many times with the "Seasoned" agents. Usually my mere 8 years has transacted as much as their 35 years!!!!
