Write a Great Blog and Features Will Follow: Tips and Advice!

According to Steven Graham , Active Rain's aficionado on blog training and coaching, an effective and  interesting blog should be a balance of four different topics:

1. Blog about Hyper local content happening in your area/neighborhood: think of local events, great restaurants, parks, holiday celebrations and festivals - give your audience something of value.

2. Post regularly about commonly asked questions that relate to your business. For example, I'm a home stager and post about advice on preparing your home for the market and give tips on projects buyers can easily do themselves - again give people something of value. Don't make your blog one big advertisement for your company- people are not receptive to this and for good reason - this is a blog where you share information, enlighten your readers and entertain them - they are not clicking on your blog to see an advertisement!

3. Write posts to Active Rain members - (like this one with helpful tips and advice.) Or write about what you'd talk about over the water cooler, blog a "pay-it-forward" story or something inspirational or post beautiful photos you've taken - this is a great way to network and create a circle of Active Rain friends that can turn into subscribers and increase your visitors!

4. Blog about your passions, interests and hobbies - like minded people will be interested in what you have to say, and this is a great way for people on Active Rain to get to know you, the person, and this is how we connect with others on AR and in the real world! You'll find that so many others in the Rain share the same experiences and passions and this increases your network.

Once your blogging on a regular basis and have estabished yourself, check in with Google to see who and how people are finding you:

To do this use Google analytics by signing in to your Google account and scroll down to "products"  - you will see the word Analytics; click on it and you will see the name of your website. Click View Report it will tell you everything you need to know in a detailed report on how much traffic you're getting and the source of visitors who are viewing your web page along with hits, what pages they visited and keyword searches that bring people to your blog and web page.

Active Rain is a powerful tool for increasing your business and when I checked out my statistics, no surprise - the largest percentage of traffic was driven to my webpage via Active Rain!

Last, but not least - I have found successful bloggers on AR write from their hearts;  like they would speak to you over a cup of coffee - they are not pretentious, egotistic or self-serving. They love sharing tips and inspire us with their blogs, writing great content regularly!

A great example of this is Pat Kennedy,  Laura S Baker , Gabrielle Rhind , Vegas BobDagny EasonPat HaddedDorie Dillard  Nestor & Katerina Gasset, Roger Mucci and Laura Giannotta -  check out their blogs to see what makes them such successful bloggers - you will learn a lot, I certainly did!

Be yourself, play to your strengths - if humor is your thing, use it in your blogs - see Richard Strahm  and Greg Nino - two very funny people!

Do you love photography - join the many groups on this subject and post your photos - we Rainers love great photos like Michael Thornton  and William Johnson's, two amazing photographers on AR!

Most important, stop thinking so much about what to blog - "just do it!" We all start at the beginning and learn as we go!

(I'm no rockstar on AR, far from it, but I remember when I wrote my first 10 posts and had maybe 1 or 2 comments, sometimes none! I stuck with it, learned a lot from the many AR resources and fellow bloggers. Now, 5 months later, I have to make time to thank all the people who take the time to read my blog and and comment........and I am truly grateful!)

Good luck and happy blogging!

Michele, Thanks for these tips.  I really need to go to a class at ARU.  Someday, I will make time for it.  But, in the meantime, I will try to absorb these hints.

Hi Michele - So we shouldn't blog about those things we don't know anything about?  Huh? :)
