I am writing my second installment to you on life in Dover, MA because it is simply unbelievable to me that a community could be this fabulous.
To begin with, I have lived in Colorado, Maine, and most of my life in MA so I am familiar with winter conditions and driving on snow. At no time in my life have I ever lived any place where the town/city has done a better job plowing and preparing the roads than is done here in Dover. In even the worst conditions the roads are safe for travel. And here's the scary part. I can tell when I'm passing from Dover into any of the contiguous communities, simply by the condition of the road. It is that noticeable. Honestly! Sounds unbelievable, but it's true.
Here's something else that I find charming about Dover. For those of you who have never been here, there is one traffic light in the town which is in the heart of the "downtown" area consisting of a few good stores. Attached to the Dover Market is Higgins Wine & Spirits. Every Tuesday evening the proprietor hosts a wine tasting event from around 5:30-7:30 at which four different wines are featured, sometimes from the same vineyard other times not. At the last one I attended there was a rep from the vineyard who provided interesting and useful information. You never know who you're going to run into at this weekly event which is attended by all sorts of town-folk from landscapers to lawyers. One of the great things about life in Dover is that not only is it impossible to detect a landscaper from a lawyer from an equestrian at something like this, but nobody even wants or cares to.
My last story happened last week when I noticed small Dover Clean-up Day signs along some of the roads. As it turns out, every year in the early spring Doverites coordinate a town-wide cleanup along the roads. As I witnessed firsthand, this includes people of all generations picking up litter along the roads in town neighborhood by neighborhood. It's all voluntary and speaks volumes about this town.
How could anyone not love living here? The school system is consistently ranked #2 in the state, real estate prices are very reasonable as compared to some of the "fancier" towns next door, and the lifestyle can't be beat. Thanks again, Mary Crane, for introducing me to Dover and finding the perfect home here for me.
