Why Didn't I Go To The Dealer FIRST?

As much as we talk about how we are the experts, and yet, people think they can buy and sell on their own (and, as a matter of fact, they do, and sometimes, successfully) I have been having car issues, and have been reluctant to go the dealer.

Why? My car is 10 years old!  My theory has always been to take the car to the dealer for the "appropriate" things: those items covered under warranty; when you get a loaner car; when it's due for the 90,000 mile service - those kinds of things. And, I bought my car used, from an auto broker, so there is no dealer relationship.

And, the dealer for this car, a Volvo, is CLEAR ON THE OTHER SIDE OF TOWN!

So, in order to find an answer to a consistently inconsistent issue, I tried a different mechanic while I was in Tallahassee this week, and they came up with what could be the answer: Foggy Thinking

a software update that generated a recall in 2007.

Now, this issue has had me sidelined on several occasions, requiring me to rent cars for 3 days, and to leave my car on at least two out of town trips for diagnostics, and dozens of rides by friends.

Truth be told, I won't know if this software update solves my problem until I have it done, but it's a hard reminder that sometimes the experts (aka dealers) are really the best place to go!

Carol,  Hmmm. So the point is you don't trust the "dealer" to give you correct information and make an attempt to up-sell you?  Is that the point?  You are just like the home seller who doesn't trust the professional albeit with your car and not your home?  I get it.  I think it is the same thing, but with a different result.  Find a dealer you trust, if you don't trust the only dealer in town either begin to establish a relationship now, or suffer the ongoing consequences.  I own Volvo's and have found a mechanic (non-dealer) who loves them.  We are not 10 years old yet, but there is almost 200000 miles on this great car.  There is always a solution to not trusting the professional and that is find one you do trust---we are out there.

I usually avoid going to the "dealer" because their service charges are typically higher than other shops.  An occasional dealer visit may be called for though. Good luck!

A software update on a car....who knew?  I have an older car so that is probably why this one is news to me!

I have relatives in the auto dealership business who have told me that the most qualified mechanics do not generally work for the dealerships. However, you do have a point that many independent shops do not have access to the tools that a dealership has nor may they be aware of any model problems, recall notices. As for me personally, I try to avoid the dealers, I get ripped off every time.

I'm the same way...I guess we shouldn't be surprised when people say I can sell this home myself!
