It's hard to believe that we are at the 99th Anniversary of the Titanic sinking and next year will be the 100th anniversary. It's also hard to comprehend as today in Westchester, it is a sunny day and I don't even need to wear a coat.
I've have always been obsessed with this ship and fascinated with what still seems so unthinkable - the luxury liner termed unsinkable - such luxury, such tragedy and such stupidity. I still can't fathom why they wouldn't have enough lifeboats, or why they were sailing so far north when they saw ice and had plenty of warnings, and why they would speed up rather than slow down or a whole bunch of other things.
This has always had an indelible mark in my memory and I will never forget. See my post on Titanic New Discovery for some relatively new findings.
I am, however, glad that this tragic event led to so many changes in the industry including enough lifeboats, drills, better communication, creation of shipping lanes, etc. And, I'm thrilled that in 1985, they finally found the Titanic.
