99th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic

It's hard to believe that we are at the 99th Anniversary of the Titanic sinking and next year will be the 100th anniversary.  It's also hard to comprehend as today in Westchester, it is a sunny day and I don't even need to wear a coat.

I've have always been obsessed with this ship and fascinated with what still seems so unthinkable - the luxury liner termed unsinkable - such luxury, such tragedy and such stupidity. I still can't fathom why they wouldn't have enough lifeboats, or why they were sailing so far north when they saw ice and had plenty of warnings, and why they would speed up rather than slow down or a whole bunch of other things.

This has always had an indelible mark in my memory and I will never forget.  See my post on Titanic New Discovery for some relatively new findings.

I am, however, glad that this tragic event led to so many changes in the industry including enough lifeboats, drills, better communication, creation of shipping lanes, etc.  And, I'm thrilled that in 1985, they finally found the Titanic.

Even though this all took place 99 years ago, some people would never take a cruise because of the Titanic incident.

I was fascinated by it too.  So many people and so much waste.  Interesting story, with lots of lessons.

Debbie, it seems that danger meant nothing if you had a big enough ship.  But they were wrong!

I remember when the finally found it in 1985, it was such big news.  I read the whole National Geographic article, and was amazed at it!

Debbie - This always fascinated me too. I can't believe an unsinkable could sink. And that the survivors that did survive could. I did not comprehend, till today, that is was 99 years ago though. Thanks for sharing.

Jeremy - You are so right.  Oh, and I remember that article so vividly, too.

Ken - I know, I can't imagine being there and witnessing that whole thing.  And, can't believe it's been a century.

Kristine - Me, too.  I've seen so many documentaries on it.  Fascinating.

Debbie,

LOVE anything and everything about the Titanic. We had taken our kids to the exhibition in Boston and during the tour they had separated the women and children from the men. It was a very somber moment.

Debbie,

Tragic loss all for bragging rights. The layers of bad judgement in this case are astounding.

Carol & Laura - Yes, pride definitely got in the way and they lost sight of priorities.  I can't believe it's been 99 yrs either.

The Titanic was always fascinating to me as well.  The movie was too fictional and that bothered me. There was enough truth there to make a true historical movie very doable and preferable.  Also the the way the Carpathia answered the distress was quite a story.

Ruthmarie - Agreed.  Supposedly there is a rumor that the Californian was in the area but ignored the requests for help.
