I recently received an email regarding 3 ways to washing windows better, and I thought I would share it with you.

window washing

1.  You might think hot, sunny days would be best for washing.  But, glaring sun keeps you from seeing well enough to do a good job.  And, heat makes window-cleaning solution evaporate faster than you can wipe it off, which leaves streaks.  Rule of thumb?  Touch the glass.  If it's hot, wait for a cooler day.

2.  You know how the automatic car wash rinses off your vehicle before spraying on the suds?  Use that same technique on your window sills to loosen dirt and debris before washing.  Pull back the curtains and dust or vacuum the interior side of the windows.  Then, hose down the exterior.  Now you're ready to get out the cleaning solution.

3.  Paper towels leave behind lint, so they aren't ideal for drying glass.  Instead, use one of these lint-free options:  clean coffee filters, crumpled newsprint, or a microfiber or flour sack towel.  Some people swear by small squeegees, but like windshield wipers, their rubber blades need to be kept sharp and nick-free to get flawless results.

Hi Kristin, Thanks for the tips.  I have heard about using crumpled newspaper, but have never tried it.  I think I'll hire someone!

I was out yesterday getting a start on this job. Convenience had me using the blue liquid and paper towels. I know there are better methods. Thanks for the reminder.

Thanks for the great tips - especially since it's spring cleaning time.  I've often heard of crumpled newspaper, but it seems so . . . dirty with all that news ink.  But it's worth a try.

Thanks for sharing very informative information. But coming from a guy, would I be better off moving when my windows need to be washed?

Good luck and success.

Excellent job Kristin!  This is one of the most important things a seller can do when preparing their home for the market as well.  Not only will it make the home appear to be well kept and clean, the light that it allows in is worth it's weight in gold!
