About Tacoma-Pierce County Schools and test scores.
Homebuyers are right to seek out areas with good schools. But are high test scores an indication of good schools?
Recently the lady who cuts my hair asked my advice about putting her 5 year old into a school district with higher test scores. Here is what I told her:
Test scores are more important than football championships. But not by much. It's becoming an emotional frenzy which is driving the schools to distraction. Test score frenzy does not help students learn more and can lead to useless anxiety First, let's consider statistics versus reality.
On average, golfers have higher IQ scores than bowlers. So if Walter Nogoodnik gives up bowling for gold, will his IQ become higher? Of course not. And most schools that report higher average test scores are loaded up with more individual students who would score higher wherever they enrolled. While native intelligence may play a part, parental attitudes and support, healthy living, home culture, and test consciousness have a major influence.Fill a school with children whose parents are pushing for high test scores and the average will be higher. That doesn't mean you can plop an average or below average performer inthat school and have any improvement.
