Fall and Winter Steelhead fishing on the Snake and Clearwater Rivers

All around the Lewis-Clark Valley the sign of the season ia all around, Santa flew in yesterday at the local mall, light are up, the boats are scattered throughout the rivers...Ahh, yes!  Steelhead season is a holiday time all in its own.  If you are an avid fisherman or lady you know what I'm talking about.  When you say you are going to you getting up at 4am to beat the rush you are not talking about the line at Wal-mart, you are talking about getting your boat launched and on the river!  This week end was particularly busy with the annual Steelhead derby, the largest derby in the nation.  The average is about 800 fishermen!! The festivities began just after midnight this morning, and ran all through today.   Steelhead season runs through December, and you can either go it your own, or on a guided tour, which there are many to choose from.  Here are some tips if you plan on using a guide- check which equipment is provide for you and what you are expected to bring, will the trips be private, or will you be booked with other groups.  There is usually special rates for large groups, so don't forget to ask, and make sure they are licensed by the US Coast guard and to check out their other certifications, and how long they have been in business.  You will have to provide your own fishing license.

The catch will run between 5-15 lbs average, with the record being 30 pounds. (I hear this year the fish are larger than usual)  The weather can be quite mild here, with the average winter temps running at around 30-40 degrees, and a couple days last January hit 65*.  Can't beat that!!

Methods to catching these beautiful creatures range from backtrolling to fly fishing, and event though you may not have a boat, many have been caught from shore!!

FISH ON!!
