Fun things to do in San Marcos, on the river.
If you have never been to San Marcos TX, you probably can't appreciate the shear natural treasure that we have here in our spring fed river that runs through the heart of the city and campus at Texas State University - San Marcos.
The river is aptly named, "The San Marcos River." It is spring fed (so it is very pure and clear) and it stays a constant 72 degrees Fahrenheit, year round (steam rises from the water in the winter). So it is very refreshing for swimming, and not too cold. It is always rated in the top 10 fresh water rivers in the country for marine biology and every year the "Texas Water Safari - "worlds toughest canoe race" starts at the river head in San Marcos and goes all the way to the gulf of Mexico (260 miles).
One of my fun things to do in San Marcos, on the river is to kayak from the river head at Spring Lake all the way down to TG's at Pecan Park. It's about a 5 mile and 5 hour tour down the river. You'll navigate through the toobers and bikini sunbathers at the beginning and work your way to the rapids at Rio Vista falls. After that, it is mostly un-spoiled nature for the rest of the trip. And it is beautiful! For all you beginners out there, be sure you grab a map or an experienced guide before heading out for the first time. You'll need to be aware of several damns and other hazards along the way.
Bottom line, one of the fun things to do in San Marcos, on the river is to rent a kayak at TG's and let them drop you off at Sewell park so that you can kayak down river about 5 miles, back to Pecan Park. It will take about 5 hours if you take your time and soak up the nature.
