What would you do if you knew you could not fail?

Seriously... what would YOU do if you knew you could not fail??

mountain climberWhen my oldest niece was growing up, we would talk about many things.... boys... clothes.... make-up and what she wanted to do with her life.  I told her that what I hoped she didn't do was look back on her life with regret.   Regret for the things she did not try to do.

"What would you do if you knew you could not fail?"

This has always been one of my favorite quotes.   Asking yourself this question goes hand in hand with allowing yourself to dream.  Think about it... our dreams are limited only by the constraints and ties we put on them.

When we are born most of us arrive with the world at our feet.  It is only after we are exposed to outside influences... parents, school, social prejudices, peers, television, the list goes on... that we begin to place roadblocks on our dreams and aspirations.

Think about it... what was the last thing you did in your personal or work life that you undertook without first knowing you would succeed?

Would you write the book you feel you have in you?
Would you get your Broker's license and go out on your own?
Would you start a Home Staging business in this market?
Would you move away from home to live in your favorite city?

I'm not advocating jumping off the cliff... but sometimes we have to be willing to take that leap of faith.

So, again I ask you .... What Would YOU Do If you Knew you Could Not Fail?

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

What a great question to ask yourself. .

I feel fortunated that I have challenged myself to extremes in many instances. . . but the bigger ones are yet to come.

Interesting question, Kathy. We all tend to worry about the what ifs which stops us from the full steam ahead!

Kathy - I believe in this philosophy and for my 40th birthday (4 years ago) I decided to fly to Africa and climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, the world's highest free standing mountain at 20,000 feet. It took 8 days to reach the summit, there was half the oxygen at sea level and the temps were -10 near the summit. It was one of the hardest physical challenges I ever did, but the rewards were incredible! My philosophy is stop talking and start doing! Great post to get us all thinking - suggested!

Kathy, that's a great way to ask yourself "what's the worst that could happen?"...the unknown can be disconcerting but we are still here proving we survive!

BARFF- I think you've taken quite a few leaps and look where you always end up... on your feet!

Myers- If I've said it once, I've said it twice
Go ahead and roll the dice!

Fernando -good for you... that must account for your success!

Andrea- ask yourself and see what your answer would be!

Debbie- I think you've already shown what you can do by taking a leap.. the growth of your business, your successful blogging here!

Toni- I think we are more aware of this as we look back and see more of our life behind us rather than ahead!

Kristine- I am in total AWE of what you did.  I honestly am speechless.  ( I do love your philosophy "stop talking and start doing")  Thanks for the suggest.

Silvia- that's another one of my favorites... what's the worse thing that could happen!

Gary-  Absolutely... look at Kristine (#8) above who climbed Mt Kilimanjaro!

I LOVE that quote too - one of my very favorites, and always thought-provoking.  One of the things I am most grateful to my father for is that he raised all 3 of us kids to believe that we could do anything we wanted to - so it was a while before life taught me that in fact, it was possible to fail.  Luckily it also taught me that failure is OK - just time to try again or adjust and try something else...

David- Thanks for leaning!  I tend not to get too overly gushy either but this is one of my favorite quotes.

Nancy- How lucky you were to have such an inspiring and supportive dad.  I've always hated the idea of giving up without even trying.

Kathy,

This is excellent advice. Now that graduations are upon us, it's also timely information for our grads. Every now and then you run across an inspirational post, article or book and it hits home. This is one of them!

Thanks Kathy.

Fear is the greatest roadblock to success.  I've had to fight fear my whole life and still haven't mastered it.  What a great question!  I believe my entry into the staging world was the last thing I did without letting the fear of failure stop me.  In some ways I've succeeded and in some ways I'm still a work in progress!
