Butter Substitute? A Healthier Way To Enjoy Butter

By
Home Stager with Sharon Tara Transformations

There are plenty of butter substitutes on the market, but usually these "diet" products have chemical or artificial ingredients in them.  They use the words "natural" and "healthy" on the label, but if you read the ingredients you will find otherwise.

olive oil and butterThe most natural alternative to butter is olive oil...a very healthy, beneficial fat, high in vitamin C and antioxidants.

If you don't want to switch to olive oil and completely give up the taste of butter, here's a compromise my mother taught me years ago.  Combine equal parts real butter (NOT margarine or imitation spread) and olive oil.

It's really very easy, and if you use a light tasting olive oil, you won't even notice the difference in flavor.  (If you prefer more olive flavor, use a stronger oil.)

Place two sticks of butter in a bowl and leave at room temperature until softened.  Add 1 cup light extra virgin olive oil.  Mix with electric mixer until well blended.  Pour into a 2 cup container with lid and refrigerate until hard.

The calorie count is about the same.

Olive oil is a little bit higher in total fat (14g compared to 11g in butter) but that's because it is high in mono unsaturated fat,  which is a good fat.

Olive oil has only 2g of saturated fat compared to 7g in butter.

Another important benefit:  olive oil has no sodium.  Compare this to the 90mg of sodium in butter.

The taste of butter with added health benefits and half the guilt.  Enjoy!

Sharon, you wouldn't believe but I have a whole drum of olive oil that was shipped from Italy and came from our olive trees there. Talk about fresh!

Happy Easter! and I'll be cooking with olive oil! LOL

Hi Sharon,

I wanted to tell you I was inspired by your sliced almond crusted haddock a while back. We have completely changed the way we eat since then. Some was inspired by your blog, some was inspired by my bood pressure. Nonetheless, I have lowered the BP significantly and actually lost a few unnecessary pounds in the process. Please keep up the healthy recipe series. You have made a difference!

John:  What a wonderful thing to hear.  Thank you!  Congrats on the weight loss and improved healthy lifestyle!  I will do my best to come up with more recipes to share.

Roger:  Thanks!  Not everyone is willing to give up butter, but this way they can at least gain some benefit from it.

Laura:  Forgot to mention before that your post mentioning that you eat butter is what inspired this one!

Great stuff, growing up in an Italian household, olive oil is a staple in our home. One thing about olive oil, when you cook with it, it loses all it's healthy properties. You need to use it without heating it...

Sharon, I do shots of olive oil every morning. Great way to start the day. A touch of sea salt helps too.

Now that is a fascinating idea, I can see how the blend would be fabulous, but I would never have thought of it!

Michael:  It does make you feel healthier knowing you are actually suppying a benefit to your body instead of just satisfying the taste buds!
