FREE Alligator Workshop at Halyburton Park

Picture of alligator at Waccamaw LakeA while back I posted about a visit CA and the girls made to Lake Waccamaw here in NC.  The number of alligators we saw was enlightening to say the least.  I truly had no idea that Southeastern NC was home to so many gators living so close to us!  I just read an article about a young gator that is living in a retention pond near our local Sam's Club.  Eeek!

I find alligators to be fascinating.  I don't really want to get up-close and personal with them, but I think they're neat to watch and I am intrigued by them.  So this FREE Workshop sounds like my kind of event!

On Thursday April 28, 2011 @9am, Mike Campbell of the NC Wildlife Resource Picture of alligators at Waccamaw LakeCommission, will discuss the behavior and biology of alligators. The workshop begins at Halyburton Park in Wilmington NC and ventures to Waccamaw State Park to observe alligators in the wild.

You must call 910.341.0075 to pre-register.  Halyburton Park is located at 4099 S. 17th Street Wilmington NC 28412

Tish,

Plain and simple I can think of one of the first tips.  Keep your distance!

Not sure I've ever seen one in the wild, but knew they were common at the Navy golf course in Charleston, but I've never been a golfer! :)

I my first experience was in the wild, when I was in Ranger School we were near them and they sound like bullfrogs at night:)) Now I would just prefer to see them from a Distance. I am surprised to hear that you can find them in NC not just in Florida.

Tish, when you are in an environment where alligators are your neighbors this type of education is priceless.

Larry ~  This is a dictum I seriously adhere to!

Bill & Liz ~  It's rather odd to be driving down the road and see them swimmng along.

Navona ~  Thanks.  No plans to get too close.

Endre ~   They're fairly prolific and frankly, a bit unnerving!

Tish, I like to watch them too, but from a safe distance.  I am always amazed at how fast they can actuallylmove.

AS much I find the same fascination with gators as you do Tish, I'd think I would rather keep my distance as well.

I Love watching discovery shows on tv about aligators. There's something really cool about them.

Hi Tish....I guess if they're living that close to you, it's to your advantage to know how they live and what you need to know about them....you can keep them!!! they don't like our cold weather....

Frank & Karen ~  A bit creepy, if you ask me!

Vickie ~  This is part of what makes them so dangerous -- they swim so slowly and then take off!

Will ~  Nothing wrong with a safe, healthy distance!

Elyse ~  Who knew!?!

Eric ~  They are very intriguing.

Barbara ~  Knowledge is power, especially for the little ones in this instance.

Good Morning Tish.  I didn't know that gators went that far North.  I thought we had them all to ourselves down here in sunny Florida.  As a UF grad, I can say that I am rather fond of them.  Have a wonderful Easter.

I have to say, they are fascinating to watch, but I don't think I'd want to live with one in the pond across the street! Those things can move FAST!
