First Time Buyers Surprise at Resales vs Rentals

Many first time buyers experience a sense of disappointment the first time they go looking at resale homes.
Up till this point they have usually lived in rentals which they saw vacant, freshly painted and carpeted and ready to occupy. Not all rentals are this way, but a very large fraction are.
In contrast many resales are still occupied by the homeowner or tenants. And, although conditions vary, they are generally not quite as fixed up as a vacant rental. A significant fraction of homeowners do NOT repaint, recarpet and install brand new appliances.
New construction will, of course, be brand spanking new. Many, many first time buyers are, however, not capable of moving from a rental right into a brand new home.
A good buyer's agent will explain this difference in advance to assist in setting his/her client's expectations.
