Nestled into the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountain setting of southwestern Virginia, Smith Mountain Lake not only offers scenery beyond compare, it offers the best of the four seasons. Smith Mountain Lake’s climate cannot be beat.

Spring & Summer

Spring at Smith Mountain Lake is just the way it should be - a strong mix of rain and sun and steady warming temperatures. Though spring can be the most unpredictable season in a climate like ours, a Smith Mountain Lake spring’s upper sixties average is warm enough to start the surf and sun activities early. Not to mention budding foliage and flowers by March. The summertime is very lake recreation appropriate with warm and sunny with temperatures averaging in the upper eighties. Summer at Smith Mountain Lake gives visitors and residents ample opportunity to stay outdoors throughout the season, soaking in the rays and making the most of a body of water that begs to be used.

Fall & Winter

Though summer is a popular season for tourism, residents know that an SML fall cannot be beat. The brilliant colors of fall transform the lake into a such a picturesque scene that local event planners, artists, photographers, resorts and entertainment agencies are being increasingly intentional about showing off Smith Mountain Lake’s fall views. Weddings well into the fall season are on the rise at SML and the upcoming film, Lake Effects, was filmed in the fall season for the same reasons. The average fall temperature is upper sixties, the colors are breathtaking and the sky is clear during SML’s fall season. Winter at Smith Mountain Lake has its own special charms. The mild climate is kind to anyone opposed to the deep chill of more northern locations. Winter meets an average high of 47 degrees with the occasional few inches of snow or icy conditions. A gentle snow covered landscape at SML is lovely and the water is clearer and more serene than the rest of the year, lending to a gorgeous view.
