Thanks for the help. Numbers seem very important now that you have explained it!
Craig, as usual, thanks for another great class. You always make it sound so simple. Nice shoutout and welcome to Andre. I've already touched base with him - someone else from my neck of the woods. Hope you had a great holiday!
Craig....great information! I sent you a couple of messages which you can now ignore - I solved my own technology issue!
I am not a math fan, but this I can relate to! Great information as always. Thanks Craig.
Craig - ok, as long as this has nothing to do with Algebra! Great information - I've also bookmarked! Thanks.
KellyP has told me to look you up; that you're a wealth of info! Wow!! I just found your blogs, and am excited to delve deeper. Craig, thanks for sharing your expertise.
Craig, this is an excellent post... but honestly, just looking at all the diagrams and numbers... it just makes my head spin. Also, Marti Garaughty did a post on this same subject a few months ago. Together I am betting they contain just about anything anyone could ever want to know about spacing and headers.
I am wondering how many times I will need to read this to understand it ? Wish I was more "techie." "suggested"
I surrender, Craig.
I have been a hold-out on AR customization for years, since so many blogs were badly messed up with clutter and barely readable.
Your post was the final straw and I have entered the dark side.......
LOL Well done.
Craig - First of all Congrats. I have not been here latley and have missed that you have come to AR as a new ambassador. Of coarse knowing my you probably had that happen 2 months ago and I am just noticing. We'll deserved.
As to your post, this all comes together for me now. I am not a techie but I have run across some blogs of late and the dimensions are out of whack. NOW I know why. Or at least I can come back and refer to this class to figure out.
Thanks for another informative article Craig! I will try this numbers on my blog. Great article as always!
Thank you for the tips Craig. I will have to look into this Google Chrome.
SWEET info!! Thank you. As much as I dislike numbers and would love to runaway from them your info on actually size is highly valuable. Much appreciated.....noted and saved of headache. Thank you.
Blessing to you Craig!!
Julia
Thanks Craig for another informative blog post. You explain technology very well and it helps so many.
Happy Easter Craig to you & yours...i get the 960 but get lost on everything else...tend not to use chrome because it messes up my blog posts for whatever reason...great post but a bit over me...Congrats on the Ambassador- your are someone who always reaches out to us ARers!
Craig- I've bookmarked this, read the whole thing and know I will have to come back to read it again. What you say makes sense and thank you as always for taking the time to put together a great tutorial.
Very good explanation, Craig, and thanks for the tip on Google Chrome 'Inspect.' One more number to check out is the width of the blog body on Localism. I believe it's less than AR, and the content doesn't always adjust correctly.
Another great class, Craig. Did you give your two weeks notice yet so you can be hired by AR?
Craig, my blog header isn't long enough and I'm thinking it must not be the magic 960 :) Love your tips about 684 and 520 as well. I had another outside blog and the pictures often looked horrid on it - I have posted them at 700, so they are too large and leap off the borders. Got lots of correcting to do...bookmarked.
Sharon
Great stuff, as usual, Craig! Thank you for taking the time to educate those of us who are graphics/math challenged!
Cinnamon - hope this helps when you are ready to put all the numbers to use, thx!
Debbe - awesome, thx!
Nona - few simple numbers once you know make a difference
Leah - I was hoping you and Andre would connect sooner than later :)
Bliz - great, thanks!
This looks chock full of good info---have bookmarked it for later when I'm less tired and more apt to understand everything! :) Thanks for posting!
Christine - got your other emails... I don't use IE for AR, but Cheryl R. and I had a nice discussion not to long ago about IE9 and reset IE to default values seemed to make a good difference when it was acting weird
Judy - glad to hear you relating!
Sally - don't worry, quadratic equations lesson next week ;)
Ken - very happy to be found, thanks Kelly for referrals!
Karen Anne - thanks for wearing the techie hat for a while :)
Mike - simple customizations go a long ways!
Ken - thanks - freshman ambassador checking in for duty! glad the numbers will be useful
Glenn - happy to see you my Seattle friend :)
Rob - terrific
Mark - great browser, even has some gems in advanced features as you can see
Julia - glad you didn't runaway at the numbers! remember the three and they'll come in handy
Debra - I'm glad to hear that :)
Bob - this must have made a connection with you then, thanks
Ginny - main point from the lesson to takeaway, watch the graphics you insert into your posts, keep them 684 pixels or narrower :)
Alan - tyvm
Kathy - glad to help
John - yes localism is a narrow 493 pixels width - but I'm going to investigate more on the auto-adjust thing... thanks for mentioning that as a reminder
Eric - hmmm isn't that vice versa, still waiting for my phone to ring ;)
Sharon - yes thanks for saying that, I forgot to mention that everyone should be aware of their outside blog dimensions as well. I haven't looked at all the templates yet, but you need to be aware of how things are looking on the outside too! check your widths there... thanks
Melissa - you are very welcome, thanks for visiting
Susan - yes - better when rested, agreed, thanks for the bkmk
Jeremy - my pleasure, thanks for commenting
Thank you so much for this post. I have bookmarked it so I can come back and make some adjustments.
Craig, you make this all look so easy. So after reading many of your blogs, I've finally subscribed.
Craig, some days it is easier than others to wear my "techie hat." Ya see, I have a pointed head, and depending on how I fixed my hair that day... the techie hat can stay on very well. Perhaps I should change my profile picture ?
And yes... congratulations on your Gold Star and your Featured Post !
HI Craig - The information in this post is very valuable since I am not aware of a single source that ActiveRain has provided themselves.
Craig - another bookmark for me as well..... great information here and will have to digest later.... thanks again
Enjoyed reading your post and will use the information to make changes to my header--thanks.
LOL ! ... I gotta take care of that when I get a spare moment !!!
Thanks for the reminder !
Cheers Craig !
Craig - Oh my, you just keep doing it, bringing us excellent information! We are so lucky to have you to send out this information - the only thing better would be to have you captured in our office as our personal "tech" person. Thanks again and congratulations on the feature! You know, I can't believe I missed it either, your being an Ambsassador - congratulations!
Another great tutorial. Thank you. I have subscribed to your blog, and look forward to your future entries...
Craig thank you for the great post. This is incredible info for all of us to use....as always.
Thanks Craig. You hit on several points that I needed to know about.
Bookmarking now.
This is definitely a keeper for me and it bookmarked next time I go adjusting my blog .. thank you
Hi Craig,
You give out such great information! I'm going to be working on this so that I can get a little more "oomph" out of my page.
Thank you.
Hi Craig, thank you for taking the mystery out of these numbers... now I know the technical reason why I like to use a width of 650 for images, they fit nicely with just a little space on both sides if centered.
Joan - you're welcome
Sheila - I'm seeing lots of photos in posts at 800 pixels and now people can see why that is too wide
Tammie - subscriber +1 ! appreciated! :)
Brian - learning something new is a great feeling
Emily - thanks!
Karen Anne - those darn techie hats, they are a trick in themselves! thanks for joining in on the post
Marc - I'm writing vol 2 of the AR manual ;)
Robert - don't forget where you parked your car, er bookmark! thx :)
L&L - you're welcome
Sheldon - I've been meaning to remind you about that header, LOL, you're a great sport, thx
Barbara - thanks on the congrats - I look forward to what techie stuff we'll work on together in our future chats :)
Catherine - I know... I could have just written - Make your header 960 wide, don't insert photos larger than 684 and IF you put a photo in your comments, make it 502 or smaller. :)
David - very much appreciated, thank you!
Jeffrey - glad you liked!
Tom - that's terrific, thx
Fernando - scribble down those three numbers and you'll be set
Jeffrey R. - as I'm reading other people's posts, I'm always looking at how they set up the appearance of their pages. With the numbers that I mentioned, it gives you a little more to plan with.
Silvia - 650 is a good one and gives you a little margin as you say - thanks for checking in :)
This really clears up a bunch of questions about the dimensions of each section on each blog. You do a really good job with these tutorials. Thanks for doing all you do on here.
I cannot believe how much information you have put into this post--enough for a million re-readings. I really need to update my banner.
Craig, after reading this post the numbers add up perfectly. I will check out this Chrome feature. Thanks.
Thank you....I will pick the right time to take this in.....I may let my banner go if I don't get this.....LOL
Craig, thanks for sharing, I am a work in progress when it comes to this stuff, but will keeping reading post like yours and get better as time goes on.
OK, that would explain a lot - Thank you! I just reset my graphics program to 684, this whole time I've had it set at 640 and couldn't figure out why didn't match when dropped in HTML.
Awesome post as always! :-) I'll be using this as I train our employees for sure.
whoa! i am going to have to bookmark this one for sure! I need to update my stuff
Thank you, Craig. Your contributions continue to "Pay it Forward" in the AR community as you do in your geographical community; we all appreciate your content.
Bryan - thank you so much, glad to hear
Irene - you said it! :)
Melissa - took me a while on this one, but boils down to just three numbers
Michael - I use the chrome inspect feature often to see how things are built
Richie - hopefully it will be useful to you when you are ready
Malik - step by step! :)
Todd - awesome, a small difference but will fill the available space a little better
Tara - terrific, thanks
Naoma - thanks for the bookmark, hope it helps you
James - very much appreciate to hear that, thank you! :)
Craig thanks for the information. As I have ramped up some blogging in AR it is good to know how to ramp up the graphics.
Thanks very much... Seems Google has one of it's compainies in everything..
Craig, I got here late to the party, as you are already featured! I read it and thought, "OOO! A feature type post!" I was right, but alas, too late. :)
Good info, I found out the 960 by trial and error a few months back...LOL
Peter - glad to help
Ken - LOL nice comment, I think you meant so on my other recent post ;)
Jeremy - glad you thought so anyway, thanks!
Lyn - long day? or just TMI? I thought some might be interested to see how I got the answers instead of just posting the numbers only.
My head is spinning. LOL But I know how well you break things down and I will get it when it isn't late and I haven't been working massive hours for a couple weeks. So bookmarked until later! Thank you!!
Hi Craig - I'm a little late to the party. It's so funny that you posted this great info just as I was blowing up the alignment of my blog page by inserting photos that are too wide, and really wide map in my comments - oops going go fix that now. Maybe I'll leave it until morning so folks can see another example of what not to do!
You Rock! Thanks for another awesome tutorial
Craig, I read the word "math," and the rest of it was "blah, blah, blah..." ;)
Just kidding, I'll bookmark it to read tomorrow when I'm fresh, and I definitely need to change my header which doesn't align properly.
Hi Craig, I guess congrats are in order on your new ambassadorship! This was a great post and explained a lot to me in regards to some issues I have had in writing posts, adding pics, etc....will keep all in mind going forward. Also came across your blog when I gained access to my active rain account again back in February, after a long hiatus and knew it is one I need to frequent, but got sidetracked over the past couple of months. Your blog just became part of my morning coffee routine or bedtime story for myself. I will be here daily going forward. Thanks for intro to Andre above...in your post.
Hey Craig - I could not leave my blog all misaligned - so I fixed the comment image to 502px wide. Now I can go back to sleep!
Craig, what a timely information. This is my third month here, and I'm still learning basics. Thank you so much for amazing instructions. I will be reading your other posts too. Have a great day.
Craig, great tips on headers...I remember when I was trying to do my first header...what a headache!
You must have read my mind that I need this information to spruce up my blog! THANK YOU!
Elizabeth, Craig's blog is VERY helpful to know how to do things. Some of it is over my level, but he's got something for everyone in here!
Did you count the outside blogs with this? I thought we needed to keep it near 600 for the outside blogs not to get all skewed? I write for both at the same time.
Great information ~ thank you for the tutorial. I have a lot to learn, so have bookmarked it to come back to!
Jeremy - if a tree falls in the woods... oh never mind :)
Shar - here's to your morning cup o' joe and blog reading!
Andre - there you are! better late then never, welcome to the party
Lynda - my blog posts are best in the morning, not late at night LOL (except for true night owls)
John - welcome back and glad to be on your reading list, thanks!
Andre (again) - I know, whew, glad that's fixed!
Elizabeth - my milestone 1000th subscriber - so happy that you have connected with my blog! I'm enjoying yours as well :)
Rebecca - yes helping newbies and oldbies alike! :) hopefully helping some before they get too far along in the struggle to understand this kind of thing...
Patrizia - as I was just saying, glad to connect just at the right time!
Jeremy - thank you sir, kind words...
Barry - hmmm, not a bad idea, "things to do - publish a book" - added to list :)
Ray - thank you for the bookmark
Lyn - outside blogs are not all created equal - I have been using the chameleon theme and it gives 655 pixels of usable width - good to mention though to give thought to your outside blog when picking a width - look from the outside in and 'reverse engineer' to your target number - thanks for mentioning that point
Gwen - thanks for the bookmark, appreciated, hope you get back to it later! -c-
Good information, Craig. Congratulation on becoming an Ambassador. Keep posting and we will keep reading and hopefully get better at blogging.
Wow, there is so much content and useful information. Thanks for not breaking it up into four posts. This is a bookmark I will use again and again. (and I need the help)
Craig,
You should think about having a Craig's Classroom website! Lots of good tips!
THANK YOU AGAIN!
Mary - thank you, will work hard live up to the name
Matt - glad you agree, I wanted to keep the flow and not break it up
Marsha - little by little we progress!
Rhonda - thanks SO MUCH, appreciated
Michele - I have it planned in my head... now when will I finally get the time?? thx :)
Hi Craig - I hear you on not having time to build a dedicated website - I'm slipping on getting my outside blog set up. Hmmm - maybe you need a Virtual Assistant! Me thinks it's time for a Donate Button!
Thanks for your hard work and dedication to the community. I have learned so much from you.
Hi Craig,
This is a GREAT post and I too have added to my favorites. My blog page is very plain and I have wanted to add banners and graphics to my previous post but because I am a newbie to blogging I just have not researched how to do it. I also have not had time to build a dedicated website so I ditto Andre's comments about the donate button.
THat is a lot of information and enough to give me a headache without coffee first. I have bookmarked it. Thanks.
Andre - appreciate your appreciation! and I like that button, will get to it hopefully sooner than later :)
Alicia - it good to start with something basic to get you going so you can get right into producing quality content - once you get momentum going and understand it all better, you can come back and refresh your style and appearance - thanks! glad this helped some
Gene - coffee and craig's classroom is always a great combo! :)
Craig, on a side note your post being included in 4 Groups made me research that. Now I understand it, and can join and post to groups! Thanks for the help, even if you didn't know you were doing it!
go Jeremy! isn't it great when something clicks... now that you know, keep an eye on all the posts that you read and see what groups people are using so you can find the good ones and join (and post to yourself)
Yes, it is!
Will do on the groups. And I also bookmarked this post for future reference, but it took me awhile to find the bookmark icon! As they say, "If it was a snake, it would've bit me!"
Jeremy - while you are on a roll... google bookmarks are better than AR bookmarks IMO :)
thanks so much for posting this. I'm going to give it a try again. I took the class in January, took what I thought were good notes, but couldn't get my header to work with the template in AR. Even after I resized it. thanks again.
Awesome and very helpful post! One question: Is it better to have two different headers for AR blog and Outside blog, or does it matter if they are the same?
Craig, This is great! I've tried to go back though and fix pics that appear too big as my header doesn't align like Sheldon's but other than pictures how can I get my blog body back to the 684 pixel size?
Elisa - I hope it goes better on your 2nd try - feel free to email me if you have questions
Sharon - they are virtually the same size 960 wide - however outside blog I understand has to be 134 pixels high and regular AR blog is 130 pixels high. I would suggest creating the taller graphic as the master and then cropping off 4 extra pixels for the regular blog - strange that they are different but it is pretty easy to workaround
DeeDee - I looked at your blog - your header graphic is 930 pixels wide and is short by 30 pixels - that is why it doesn't align quite right - but you can fix that easily enough once you know your target number now... :)
Wow Craig! Thank you. Great tools and have been using Chrome and did not know how to analyze features I like. Love the Inspect option.
Thank you soooo much for this Craig. I learned some of this by making ugly mistakes and I still have to check my presets...I try to move them over from Picasa at 640 but if I don't pay attention I send them over higher and then they take too long to load. Great advice and continued great service to our AR community.
Man, you always write the best posts. I have a bunch of your stuff bookmarked for when I have time to work on my blog. Thanks so much for sharing!
Craig, thanks for the Active Rain Blogging lesson. It is much appreciated.
Craig, let me go grab a pot of coffee. I will need it to sort through all this information. Thanks!
I'm with Ron - glad I'm sipping coffee as I read this. I'm bookmarking AND printing! Thanks.
Okay, I think it's worth mentioning that the sidebar width is 220. I remember reading that somewhere before, but I wasn't sure so I came and found this post hoping it would tell me. Fortunately I was able to use the inspect feature of Chrome that you mentioned to confirm it. It's important to know so you don't end up with widgets too wide for the sidebar.
Tara - isn't the inspect tool cool - I use it all the time - widgets too wide are a common problem - now there you go doing extra credit work :)
Wow, thanks for not stopping over & 'correcting' my header! Whewwww.
I hate it when you reblog someone & it contorts all the past posts & just messes things up! Good FYI & tutorial.
Craig,
It is a very good information. i use images and was hesitating about the size, so this makes me happy. 684 is perfect ofr me.
One thing still bothers me. I think the blogs that go to Localism have more restrictions to the width.
Lyn - reblog often messes up another page, you inherit their graphics! thanks for visiting
Arnolds - background for blog pages, hmmm sounds like a good idea for future post
Jon - yes localism is VERY narrow at 493px... the good news is that the AR app automatically downsizes the photos for us (however you do have to be aware of that size for other things like youtube embeds where it cannot downsize the embed... I wish AR ould widen the localism frame - it is far too narrow in my taste!)
Hey Craig... I wanted to make a new background/wallpaper image for my blog.. i actually did do it on picnic, but the size needs to be tweeked some... what are the dimensions for that?
So much to learn -- how lucky we are to have you sharing all this knowledge with us. Bookmarking for future use -- gotta work on Tish's header and create one for myself at some point.
Hope that you and yours had a joyous Easter!
