Sometimes you just have to play in the rain...

As I sat here preparing Easter dinner, being so thankful for what a life I have and the amazing people in it, I was thinking about all that I have been through in the last year.  Life in general!  But the re-activation of my license, test prep, test taking, marriage done, and the loss of both of my parents.  I cooked a great dinner waiting for my two boys to come back to me for the week.

Sometimes you just have to play in the rain....

Preparing the table, getting everything set, enjoying great company and...................just being an Adult.  Sometimes we get so wrapped up in our life, we forget what it is like to be a kid!  I had a chance to see Kevin Carrol speak a couple of years ago, and that man is astoundingng.  He wrote the book, "Little Red Boucning Ball".  That title is an analogy for comparisons of us as adults and us as kids.  He talked about at what point in our lives do we loose our ability to enjoy our imagination and forget to have fun?  When did playing "Tag" get converted into not wanting to be the "Silly" one in the group?

Sometime you just have to play in the rain....

I was eating dinner, listening to my boys interact with all of the guests at my house, and how much fun they were having!  I was then thinking about my sons baseball games last night.  How proud I am of him.  How much of an amazing young man he is becoming.  I sat there watching him, listening to trey and Evan in discussion and being in disbelief.  How fast they are growing up. I then watched them and their friends go outside to play some baseball.

Sometimes you just have to play in the rain.....

The clouds rolled in, the thunder started and then it started raining.  All of a sudden I had my "DAD" hat on, and was going to tell them to come inside and get out of the rain.  What a "dud" I was thinking.  My kids were outside and they came to the door!  Hey Dad, it is raining cats and dogs out there.

I then thought back to the day I was 8, camping out in California and it started raining.  Raining hard.  We asked mom if we could play outside since we were already muddy.  "What the hell" was her response.  That was one of the memorable days of my life.  I looked my boys in the eyes, (I know they were expecting me to haul them inside), and said, "Have fun!

Sometimes you just have to play in the rain.....

WOW!  What an amazing, energizing feeling came over me.  Listening to the excitment and enjoyment they were having. My boys and their friends kept talking about how much fun they were having!  Oh to be a kid again!

Sometimes you just hace to play in the rain....

For me, I am going to try and add that silliness and goofiness back into my life.  Not take things so serious.  Why make life so much more difficult than it has to be!  Not going to do it anymore!  I want to smile like, Trey, Evan, Jacob, Evan, Lauren and David did.  Good to be like a kid again.

Sometimes we as professionals get so wrapped upped on our business goals, getting the next deal, meeting the next "Big" one, striving to make more money, while forgetting to have fun in our great business.  That is why I enjoy Active Rain so much, this platform allows me to remember why I do what I do, help educate through my passion and remember what is important to me!  Still a kid at heart!  A goal to strive for!

Brandon - sorry to hear about your hard year... but happy to hear about your new outlook on life - and you're right! Life is what you make of it - sometimes it's hard to do - but it's a much easier journey when you travel through it with a smile on your face. Happy Easter!! KEEP SMILING!!

Hi Brandon...this was touching and reminded me that the best things I every gave my kids is the time I spent with them.  Now they're all grown up and I'm doing the same with my grandkids.  Today we had Easter dinner and we colored in the coloring books I keep at my house for them.  In my heart of hearts, at age 50 I'm still a Toys-R-Us kid :).

We could all learn a lot from your post.  This same joy of being a child ( a child on horseback in my case) is what brought me to specialize in my niche.  It is my passion.  Way to go for recognizing what is important!

I think Emily said it best when she said it's easier to travel through life with a smile on your face.  Some days present more of a challenge for that than others.  Hopefully your days in the future will become easier and more fun for you.

Emily, you are so right.  Life is what you make of it.  Through the eyes of a child!  Thank you

Constina, it is awesome to always be a Toys-R-Us Kid! :)

Dan, Thank you so much for your wishes.  Life is good.  Looking at things as challenges, not obsticales I can't overcome!  Take Care!

Ronald, I can't agree with you more!  Every now and then, I get that epiphany, that my children are just that....children.  I get so caught up in my everyday things, sometimes I expect them to be older.  That realization is awesome!

Catherine, I am so glad that you found that niche!  Passion.  That makes you so successful.  Have a great day!

Doug, Thank you for your thoughts as well.  Future days are going to be brighter.  As they say, "That which does not kill you, makes you stronger" hasn't ever been more true.  I am here, upright and breathing.........So much better than the alternative :)  Have a great day!

Brandon,

One day you will look back remembering your children as just that, children.  As parents we only get that one moment in time allowing those memories and family traditions to occurr and develop.  In all of my limiting beliefs I had while my children were young, carving out a career in this time consuming  business...the one thing I have learned now with adult children and a clearer picture of how incredibly fortunate I am....YOU Brandon have already figured it out.

Love your children, be a child with them while still guiding them as a parent.  Listen to them, hug them and tell them you love them each and every day.  The gift your children will give back to you is when they speak of the memories you allowed them to have as just being children.

Wonderful post, Brandon!  We've finger painted our faces, had water fights...in the house, walked through the river fully clothed 'cause the fishin' was good on the other side.  I'm sorry you have had such a rough year but surely your ability to see joy through your children's eyes will be a healing tonic for you as you move forward with much more positive things on the horizon. :)

My kids are older.  My oldest is 21 with two little girls of her own and my youngest is almost 11.  I can assure you yours will remember the fun, silly things you let them do or they SEE YOU do!  As I enjoy coffee with my older kids, those memories come up constantly.

Wonderful post! And you will not ever regret the rain decision. My kids still remember how they would light up when it rained because they would put their boots on (sorry, I'm still a mom) and go out and splash in the puddles.

Brandon -- You've certainly had a rough year and now you have no where to go but UP. Your attitude and commitment to not take life so seriously will help you heal and move on. You're definitely on the right track.

Thanks for bumping me back to reality Brandon.  We can be so focused on the "trees" that we lose the "forest" of why we first entered into this business.  I hope that every day of 2011 is better than the one before it both professionally and with your kids.

Brandon, don't you love it when those moments of clarity just come to you? And you realize so much of what we stress over doesn't really matter.  It's the memories you create that do. Your children will always remember that day and that you encouraged them to do it.

My daughters are now in their late 20s and they still love to retell how when they were in elementary school I woke them up at 10PM to go sledding under a full moon on our ice-encrusted hill.  School had been cancelled and as I looked outside I thought "wouldn't that be fun." It was a big hit.  Always grab those moments!

Awesome, Brandon.  It's great to remember why we work.  We work to have a life, and sometimes we get caught up in the opposite.  Good for you.

I agree with Sally. Very easy to get side tracked, isn't it? Brandon, I'm sure you will find the safe path between both - happiness and success. Keep a focus. Great post.

Gwen, Thanks for the reply. Letting them be themselves is so great.

Carole, you are so right!  Seeing the world through Trey and Evan's eyes definately put things in perspective

Sandi,  I hope that they remember days like that!  Make them smile!

Conrad, sometimes it is the little things that give us the epihinany we need.  Hope things are good for you.

Leslie, you are so right.  those are the things that keep me grounded and not to take life so serious.  Thank you!

Sally, days like this remind me of "WHY" I do this job.  Talk about a reality check :)
