Mike's Ripple of a MEME

Education & Training with Tech and Social Media Consultant

I was tagged for my second Meme by Tom Weiss weeks ago. I have put it off primarily because it is so very hard for me to write about myself. My first Meme can be found here. I wasn't happy with that one and I can honestly say this one doesn't please me either. I started this thinking I was going to use another song "The Wheel" after I left a comment on Jason Sardi's rather philosophical post. But the more I wrote this Meme, the more that Ripple seemed a better fit.

Ripple means different things to different people. For me, Ripple is everything we do, everything we are. Ripple is the embodiment of the spirit we find here on ActiveRain. A fine example of Ripple can be found in one of Tom's posts here.

So here's 5 things you don't know about me.
Each one is accompanied by a different version of the song.
If you have the time please listen to each.

Closet Deadhead -
For those that don't understand, it isn't about the drugs, the long hair, or the lifestyle. It's about the music. It's about the lyrics. Yes I do have a 1972 Westfalia Camper. But I like my short hair, I don't do drugs, and I'm a workaholic. I also like the obscure Dead derivatives. Grateful Dawg, Dick's Picks, Ratdog, Old and in the Way, and one of my personal favorites, Wake the Dead, a cover band that uses traditional celtic folk instruments.

If you call me at the office, listen closely and you may hear the melodic sounds lightly playing in the background.

If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung
Would you hear my voice come through the music
Would you hold it near as it were your own?

It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken
Perhaps they're better left unsung
I don't know, don't really care
Let there be songs to fill the air

Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
Nor wind to blow

Reach out your hand if your cup be empty
If your cup is full may it be again
Let it be known there is a fountain
That was not made by the hands of men

There is a road, no simple highway
Between the dawn and the dark of night
And if you go no one may follow
That path is for your steps alone

You who choose to lead must follow
But if you fall you fall alone
If you should stand then who's to guide you?
If I knew the way I would take you home

Moderator -
I silently moderate the Newbie Group with a team of 5 other absolutely wonderful people who are dedicated to helping those new to ActiveRain find their way, find their voice, and find the rewards that most all of us already know. We all have to start somewhere and the Newbie Group is a great place to start.

I spend some of my time pointing people in the right direction, some of it answering their questions, but the bulk of what I do is delete improper postings that don't adhere to the published rules. I'd much rather spend all my time helping instead of deleting. This seems so sad to me. Please read the rules.

Broken Bones -
I started school heading towards a medical profession. You might say I have a strong background in A & P. In the spring of 1985 while riding my RZ-350 in the hills above Berkeley I "ran out of talent" and lost the front end as I entered the turn. I slid on my helmet and left shoulder for quite a while. I might have been ok if it wasn't for the curb. It broke just about every bone in my left shoulder. For those keeping track at home that would be the scapula (completely shattered), the clavical (clearly cracked), and my humerous (I had a hairline crack in the shaft of the ball)

Less than two weeks later, I wasn't supposed to be riding, but was on my way to an A & P final of all things, when an elderly man pulled out in front of me, forcing me to lay down my brand new Honda Interceptor. I couldn't possibly break much more but I destroyed yet another bike.

Option Trader -
Options are simply the right to purchase or sell a stock at a certain price in the future. They are the closest form to legalized gambling that I know of. I have been an active trader for years. Strangely, I don't like to gamble, not on sports, not in Vegas, not even amongst friends.

I could talk for hours about Japanese Candlesticks, Fundamentals, Technical's, MACD, Stochastics, Leaps, Collars, Straddles, Strangles, Condors, Butterflies, Naked Puts and Calls (just to name a few). While the names are intriguing, and I could easily make it a full time profession, it just isn't personally satisfying, it doesn't feed my soul. I find the business significantly empty and hollow.

I design all my own websites. I write the code myself. I like clean code (although html is not considered code). I would never use web editors like FrontPage or DreamWeaver as they add so much unnecessary garbage. Instead I write the body of my work using just notepad. I am self taught and dabble in javascript, CSS, php, and cgi scripting.

Very early on I saw the benefits of blogging. I have been a daily blogger since early 2001. I write to 5 other "outside" blogs just about daily.

As a bonus, here's an excellent tribute to the original.

The Ripple of tagging continues...

I pick

  1. Mike Jones,
  2. Mary Pope-Handy, and
  3. Gary Bolen

Primarily because I checked and they are not on Lucky's List, they intrigue me, and they all recently added me as an associate.

Sorry kids.
(for some reason my original post deleted itself and so this is a repost)

Sarah- You are much too kind.

Somehow I lost the first posting of this after three comments.   It self deleted.

With it went a comment from Thomas Weiss, Jason Sardi and Debra Siglin.  I have no idea why.

But thank you! - (You can go back to punishing me now, I think I like it).

Carla - Thanks for the nice comment and visit.

Tom - When I was 16 I bought an almost new motorcycle from a buddy.  My parents were vehemently opposed to anything motorcycle.  It was a Honda 550.  I rode it to school almost daily.  I kept it at a friends house a block away!

Saddly, my Parents never saw me race.  My wife on the other hand, I met in the middle of my racing career.  She became the team manager.  When we switched to Desert Racing she really had to manage a large crew - and with the logistics involved, I'm amazed she stuck with me.

I ride just about daily.

As a newbie Mod, I'm nothing. You should see the rest of the team.  They are the real stars!

I love this MEME.

It didn't tell me what high school you attended and it gave me insight into your Internet world.

Very interesting, except for your YouTube pics keep randomly going off, so I have the dead blaring from my computer. On off, on off!! Very funny.  I can't say I am a deadhead, but I completely relate on the web stuff. I used to do my own websites.  Taught myself html, css, blah, blah, but I was spending way too much time on that instead of doing what I get paid for, so I hired someone to do it.  Funny, I have virtually forgotten everything now and technology changes so quickly!!  I didn't know you were a moderator!  Excellent meme.

Lenn - Sorry I missed the High School.  Maybe next time.

Ginger - The YT must be your computer somehow.  Very interesting.  Nowadays I mainly use the html for things like posting here on AR.  Good to know it though.

Mike - I can't believe I have never heard of Wake the Dead.  I'm a huge Irish music fan as well as a dead head.  I checked out their songs on iTunes,  Can't wait to download them.  This is probably my all time favorite Meme.

Sandi - That's why I'm a closet Deadhead.  I chose not to get off into Mickey Hart and all his cool projects like his sitting in with the Gyuto Monks (that would have too far out) or Planet Drum.  Someday it you are really lucky I'll show you my collarbone. LOL

Maureen - I love their stuff.  They are out of Berkeley and I bought both albums that they had years ago at a street fair they were playing at.  You are too kind!

Great job on your second meme here!  I did just add it to my alphabetical meme list and thanks for letting me know.  Please let the people know that you tagged to put a link in my list so it is easier to get to.  When we e-mail internally with AR, the page does not link.
