IKEA is here! IKEA is here!

For months, IKEA enthusiasts have been watching the construction at the intersection of IH35 and FM 1435 in Round Rock.  First, the Outlet Mall opened, to rave reviews.  But we had to wait for the real treat.

Now, as a Texan, I really have no problem driving 150 miles one way to Houston from Austin for an afternoon of lunch and shopping at IKEA and Penzeys.  But it does take a whole day there and back and can only rarely be done on the spur of the moment.  And the catalogue just isn't the same . . . really, it isn't.

But last week, finally, to great fanfare and LOTS of traffic, with the roads leading to it still under construction, IKEA finally opened.  I passed on the first day, but my husband and I couldn't resist going a couple of days later for dinner (Swedish meatballs with lingonberry sauce! MMMMMM!) and to look around.  We only bought a couple of little things, and only one piece of furniture, a stepstool for height-challenged me, but I spied many things that I'll be going back to pick up for a pittance to use in staging.

My husband went back, on Black Friday of all days (while I went to less crowded venues such as Office Depot, the grocery store - practically empty the day after Thanksgiving, but I had to get some items for my Saturday After Thanksgiving Gumbo - and the feed store) and came home with more treasures.

Now, if we could just get a Penzey's to open up in the area, life would be relatively complete.

I visited an IKEA in Newark, New Jersey.  It was exhausting to walk thru the aisles.  I think they should issue in-line skates for shoppers...

They do have some cool stuff...my daughter was tempted to buy some, I hating to carry things on the plane refrained!

Yes, you do want to be wearing your hiking shoes when you go to IKEA!  But now that they're local, I suspect it'll be a bit easier because I won't feel compelled to look at every little thing just to make sure I don't miss anything cool.  A welcome change from our trips down there.

Someone told me the closest one to Cleveland is in Pittsburgh; they are selective about how many they have!  I used to visit IKEA when I lived in the D.C. area; made me wish I was a kid, that room at the front (do they still have it?) with all the colorful balls and you can jump around on them.  Somehow I figured they would throw me outta that room.  Congrats, it's a nice addition to your community!

At one time they would only have stores in port cities or cities reasonably near a port; it was one way they kept their prices low.

We tried to buy stock when we first discovered them and saw how popular they were.  Unfortunately, as is the case with many things we try to buy stock in, they were (and are, as far as I know), privately held - by one man, the creator of IKEA.  Last I heard, they were in 130 countries, and one guy owns all of them.  Yes, he IS richer than Bill Gates (or, apparently, anyone else) - and he started out as some sort of poor apprentice.

The ball room!  Their entire babysitting room, in fact - it was one of the things that first impressed us about them (because our 22-year-old was, at that time, young enough and short enough to be left there while we shopped).

I'm jealous! There isn't an IKEA anywhere close enough to be reasonable to where I live in Florida. I still have furniture that I bought 20 years ago, their stuff is stylish and timeless in its simplicity.   Happy shopping!
