I have blogged in the past about Urea-formaldehyde insulation, and I still frequently find it on inspections.  Many people still have vague recollections of its being a problem in the past.  And of course the Canadian government still thinks it is a big issue---while the EPA is relatively mute on the subject (although they do have a lot to say about Formaldehyde in pressed wood products).  Buyers always want to know what its presence in the home will mean to them going forward with the transaction.

There were some early reports of people having respiratory issues after having their homes insulated with the stuff and the media had a field day with it---crushing it as a viable means of insulating homes.  And of course the fact that Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen in animals fanned the flames.  The respiratory fears were later found to be unfounded (except in extreme cases) but by then it was too late and its use was mostly abandoned as newer spray foams were developed that did not contain formaldehyde.  There were plenty of other factors to account for the increased incidences of respiratory issues.  One factor was making homes tighter and not making provisions to have adequate air changes in the home.  It wasn’t “rocket science” but it did spurn a whole new field of study that has ecome known as “building science.”  Most experts today assert that most elevated Formaldehyde levels in homes with Urea-formaldehyde insulation actually is the result of out-gassing of furniture, carpet padding and other formaldehyde emitting sources within the home.

But that was then---this is now.  So what about finding the stuff in homes today?

The biggest problem with its presence today is that it makes lousy insulation.  In this case the media killed the product for the wrong reasons---reasons only discovered when the first remediations were undertaken.  The stuff shrinks like crazy---anywhere from 10% to 15% in all directions----leaving a block of insulation in the wall cavity completely surrounded by air that can form convective loops.  Convective loops are what moves air---supporting and encouraging the transfer of heat-to-cold through the wall.  This is not a good idea if you want the insulation to do the best job.

As a builder I have found Urea-formaldehyde insulation that demonstrated how much it shrinks and occasionally as an inspector I find small examples.  The following pictures were taken in a home where someone had taken off the wall finishes exposing the insulation---leaving it for me to get some good pictures of.

When found, remediation was and is difficult.  Some jurisdictions (Canada) require special protocols for removal.  Mechanical means of breaking the stuff up in the cavity and then vacuuming it out of the space were attempted in the early days of trying to get rid of it---but there were risks with this approach because wiring and other elements in the wall could be damaged---not to mention that the stuff would not be truly cleaned from the cavity.  Removing drywall is likewise costly but most likely the best method.  Attempts to add insulation around the shrunken insulation were usually less than successful. 

What should be attempted for any given house would likely vary with the type of house and other plans for remodeling.  Since this insulation was mostly installed in older homes that had no insulation, these homes often need extensive remodeling any way.  Removing wall finishes down to the studs provides an opportunity to get rid of the Urea-formaldehyde insulation as well as facilitating re-wiring and re-plumbing of the home that might also be needed.

Climate would also be a factor, and depending on the area’s heating and cooling needs, doing nothing might be an option as well.

Chahhlie, is there a point when the UFI stops shrinking? If so, would another over - coat of the newer spray foam be an option to fill in the cracks and volume? That way it would be far less costly and removal/remediation would be not needed. Yes, you would still have to take the wall down to the studs, but...just askin'...

He built my office, but the product wasn't in our area when I did.  He is really an excellent contractor.  He has said they will have very low power bills.  Now I want to know in your opinion is it worth adding my addic?  I have blowin in insulation there and well my power bill seems reasonable, but I would love "low"

Peter, yes---pretty common stuff

Peg yes---most of the shrinkage occurs right after installation.  If you are opening up the walls just get rid of the stuff.

Tammy what kind of blown in?  If it is cellulose it would likely never pay for itself to remove the cellulose and add the Icynene.  if it wasn't there it would be a good practice to cover the lid with a few inches of icynene and then bury it with cellulose---but cellulose in itself is darn good insulation.  It "might" make sense with other types of blown-in insulation.

I have IR scanned a few homes with that stuff in the walls. It ain't pretty. Lots of voids like you see in your pictures.

OK, which is it?  Convective loops or voids?     ;)

My understanding is, despite the press, that about 2% of people were even bothered by it.  It is as carcinogenic as saccharin, which they later found not to be!  And over time it loses its chemically allergic punch. 

The shrinkage is the problem though.  Well, hey, isn't it always?    Again   ;)

Well, we all get a little shrinkage with age.

This stuff was used so infrequently in my neck of the woods that it really hasn't been that much of a problem.  Where it was used (in my opinion) it may as well just not be there at all for all the good it does.

Had it in a rehab I did 10 years ago and I still remember how much of a pain it was to get out.

Jay, if you got voids you got convective loops---even in fruit loops :)  And yes we all wrestle with shrinkage and expansion

Jack it is pretty easy to deal with once the walls are opened up :)

This is something I have had extensive experience with. In the early 80s I spent a season in the high arctic supervising its removal from a large school building and getting it properly disposed of in this environmentally sensitive permafrost region.

We had to dismantle interior or exterior walls depending on the construction complexity and remove and contain the stuff. Then the walls were fully re-insulated with fiberglass plus vapour barrier and then new gyproc installed.

Out gassing of the formaldehyde was the problem. There were no heat recovery ventilation systems in existence then. The shrinkage was evident, even with relatively recent installations. Of note; we found lots of dead insects in pockets inside the insulation.

The shrinkage was directly related to the out gassing. That shouldn't be too surprising.
