Realtor Safety- Open house-Read and prepare yourself

By
Real Estate Agent with ERA First Advantage Realty

I live in a Newburgh/Evansville Indiana.  It is the 3rd largest city in Indiana and basically a small town at heart.  Our crime statistics usually consist of family related crimes.  Our crime statistics are low.  I leave my keys in my car at the office, my house.  My parents still leave their doors open at their home.  If there is a murder it is usually family or drug related.

I have a warning for all agents to NOT let your guard/gut down ever.  Your guard is your gut !

About 2 months ago I had a regular open house at my listing on the North side of town.  It was the 3rd one that I have had and I usually have a good turnout.  I had several people thruout the day but one person stood out for me.  He was nicely dressed and roamed around the house freely.  Something didnt feel right.  I am the type of person that is in focus with whom I am with instead of in focus of my surroundings.  I never thought I would pick up on a creepy/ not right person....but I did this time.  I dont know why....but I did.

He never said anything wrong at first....we never made small talk because I was busy with another couple in the house.

But something wasnt right

I thought to myself that I cant let the other open house couple leave, until this guy leaves.  I was thinking that over and over.

Im not sure how long he was in the house but he left before the other couple.

I watched outside as the couple left.  I had seen the car that the creepy guy drove when he came to the house and it was still in the drive.  Actually it was parked quite a ways away.  The creepy guys car was still there.  I couldnt tell if he was still in the car or not.  I watched for awhile.  Finally , I seen some movement , so I knew that there was someone in the car. He was probably there for 10 minutes.  In retrospective.....he was waiting for someone else to show up.

Im thinking "why is he still here"  , I didnt like him , I felt something was wrong with him and he is still here?

Keep in mind ....this is  a small conservative town....nothing happens here.!

Well , like I said , this was 2 months ago.

Last Sunday, at an open house, one of our agents was attacked.

Attacked in our small town of good and conservative home owners !!

She is ok, but shook up.

He came on strong at the open house, there was no one else at the open house.  She felt that something was wrong when he wanted her to go to the basement.  She did not go down.

Then he made other remarks.  Enough was said to make her go to the front door.

He rushed her to the front door

He attacked her at the front door

She screamed and ran away....... she was lucky

She was at a very private setting. Private drive with hardly any neighbors

Its all over our local news and community

After conversations with other agents , and their experiences with this man....this is the SAME MAN that came to my open house.

How do I know?

  • I remember the car he drove......it matches the car the attacker drove
  • I remember the height of the attacker
  • I remember the color of his hair
  • He said the same thing to me as he said to other agents.....exact same sentence!

I dont know WHY I had these feelings....but I did.

Please remember this for EVERY person you come in contact with , EVERY day !

I hope this helps someone have a heighten sense of security.

Jules

Hi Julie,

Being a Realtor, and living in neighboring Owensboro KY, I heard the news, and am on guard. Thank you for your post.  SAFETY at open houses is something we just take for granted.

Several of our agents, myself included, have answered blocked calls, from an anonymous man, making crude, lude comments.  Our local Board is aware of this situation, and we're definitely keeping a more watchful eye.

My prayers and thoughts are with your colleague.   Let's keep each other safe!

Incredible story, Julie. I just saw online that GE will be offering a "Panic Button" to realtors and am blogging about it... but I'm linking to your story so people can see why it's important.  I'm writing the post at Shak & Jill - come by and take a look!
