Greer Ranch Living, Murrieta CA: Another Hummingbird Builds Her Nest.

An unusual thing is happening just outside my kitchen window... A mother hummingbird is building her nest.

What’s unusual to me is that she’s building her nest on a palm tree-shaped aluminum light that I bought at Costco a couple of years ago. (Thank you, Costco!)

She built her nest on one of the palm tree's metal supports. You can see her holding a piece of building material in her mouth.

This is the third nest I’ve discovered in my yard in the past few weeks. Below are the other two.

Wow Bill I can't believe anyone can be that lucky--three nests?  We just saw our first hummingbird of the year today, and I thought that was thrilling enough.

The hummingbirds must really like it at your place, that's incredible you found three nests and an action shot too - beautiful photos!

Hi Lisa and Robert.  Thanks for the compliment!  It’s not until a hummingbird comes out of her nest and tries to chase me away that I discover the nest. They fly so fast, that I don’t see them… I just hear them buzzing about my head. So I step back a few feet until I see her, then watch her retreat to her nest and discover its location. And oddly enough, two of the three nest are not very high off the ground. The empty nest photo, for example, is just three feet above the ground. (Sure wish I had discovered it before it was abandoned because I would have loved to get some photos of hummingbird chicks.)

Hey Charles! I do feel blessed. They are amazing little birds. It’s so cool to watch them feeding on flower nectar as the dart back and forth… and backwards. (That’s the capability that I find so fascinating… that they can fly backwards.)

Hi Chris!  Congratulations on discovering your first hummingbird of the year!  I have no idea why they like our yard so much, but I’m happy that they do. I know I have a couple of more nests in my yard, but they are up high in the trees and I can’t see them… I only see the hummingbird occasionally flying in and out of the same spot. I know she’s there… somewhere.

Hello Diane.  I feel really fortunate that I captured an image of a mother hummingbird building her nest. I didn’t know I did until I downloaded the photos to my PC and saw the images up close. It was a pretty cool discovery. (And I have no idea what the nest-building material is.)

Bill - It's always great to slow down and watch nature at work around us.  You must have a peaceful backyard to attract so many birds. Enjoy!

Hey Larry! Hmmm... you know, I DO have a peaceful backyard. Very peaceful. Maybe that does explain why I have so many hummingbirds nesting there. Thanks for the insight!

Hi Bill, I came over to see if you had posted the Hummingbirds and you did. These photos are wonderful. Thank you for mentioning it in your comment to me and I am delighted to see these. These photos are a real treasure. Perhaps the next one or if any of the nest are still available, you could how tiny the nests are by holding a relatively common item that people would recognize  to show the scale. Beautiful!
