Factories in town made buttons, paint and varnish, hats, furniture, pottery, lime, dairy products and pasteboard, among other goods. Tobacco became the major crop in the area, and tobacco warehouses sprang up to handle its storage and processing before sales with iron furnaces, a knife factory, grist mills, sawmills, lime kilns, carding and cotton mills, hat factories, stage-coach shops, harness shops, a paper mill, and other plants in operation. Many historical buildings and homes still grace New Milford’s town green and streets.
That’s not to say that New Milford and the surrounding towns are old-fashioned; in fact, the area has been home to some of the world’s most innovative companies, including technology giants, pharmaceutical leaders, and major manufacturers.
