New Milford is the largest town in Connecticut, it is nearly 62 square miles. Located in Litchfield County it has a wealth of history, it was founded by twelve families in 1711. From New Milford’s role in the American revolution, the Underground Rail Road and Civil War this town was thriving. In the second half of the 19th century, many new industries came to town. The Water Witch Engine Company, local telephone and electricity companies, and newspapers were all founded. Factories in town made buttons, paint and varnish, hats, furniture, pottery, lime, dairy products and pasteboard, among other goods. Tobacco became the major crop in the area, and tobacco warehouses sprang up to handle its storage and processing before sales with iron furnaces, a knife factory, grist mills, sawmills, lime kilns, carding and cotton mills, hat factories, stage-coach shops, harness shops, a paper mill, and other plants in operation. Many historical buildings and homes still grace New Milford’s town green and streets.
