Saving The Music In Vista, California Classrooms!

Local Vistan's are planning a music festival fund raiser. An effort is afoot in Vista, California to keep the pitchy drones of recorders and ping of xylophones alive in Vista elementary schools classrooms. The "Save Vista Music" campaign spearheaded by several music instructors, parents and the owner of a Vista music management company is aimed at keeping music in the district's 17 elementary schools campuses.

The centerpiece of the ambitious effort is a three-day music festival May 6-8, 2011 in which they are hoping to raise enough money to save the program which faced dramatic cuts otherwise. Arts education has been under fire for years as schools focused their emphasis and funding -- on the three R's to cope with the state's relentless fiscal crisis. Vista's music program started in 2006 and was funded by a state grant. Students receive 30 minute music lessons every two to three weeks. In 2008 the state gave cash-strapped districts flexibility to use grants that were earmarked for special programs for other purposes.

The program continued until this year when the district determined it needed to use money elsewhere. The district was able to spare two of the seven teachers for next year, but without more funding the program will be a fraction of its current size. It is estimated that it will take $250,000 to bring back the five other instructors. Ā The "Save Vista Music" three day concert series will include a variety of acts performing at the city's Moonlight Amphitheater and Avo Playhouse. The series starts with a Cinco de Mayo Festival on May 6 and culminates with a jazz festival May 8 both at the Moonlight Ticket vary from $10 to $40 for the shows.
The Group also is accepting donations and looking for sponsors. Lorraine and Loretta, good for you for plugging the music festival in order to keep music in schools. We lost music in our elementry schools many years ago, but not before our two girls were introduced to music at an early age and are now both earning a good living as musicians. I encourage you to go all out! It is something that schools should continue to teach.

Again, being a good Agent is showing people you care. Great post, and best of luck. Where would we be without music in our lives?

The budget cuts are affecting the elementary classrooms to such a large extent. I certainly hope this festival is successful.

Vickie:

The challenge is to keep the program going. Here in California we have the lottery which was to contribute to the schools-- but I often wonder how much of the money actually gets given to the schools.

Ken:

I agree where would be without music in our lives, and educating those that would love to learn how to play a instrument, or write music.

Ted:

Thanks for the words of encouragement, when I look at the cost to take lessons to learn how to play an instrument, it is expensive, and the world of music teaches a student so much, there is math, how to keep time, how to read musical notes, etc.
