Moving to the Country!
(by Katrina Walters, Schweller Properties)
A few months ago, my husband and I moved from Oakley to Knightsen. For those who are not familiar with the area, Oakley is an up and coming city, just recently achieving their cityhood in 1999. Knightsen however, is more in the country, where your neighbors have pets such as goats and horses. Since I have a horse of my own, we thought it would be a perfect set up to get a little bit of land and finally have a horse in our backyard.
We found a home sitting on a little over three acres and it is perfect! After many hours of hard work, fencing was put up and my horse is finally in our backyard. We still have many boxes to unpack, but as long as I can see my horse in the backyard, the world is okay with me.
We have found many benefits to living out in the country, some not so pleasant with my children (Jesse, 11 and Jordan, 8). You see, my optometrist, Dr. Linder, once told me that she would have her kids run laps around their block when they misbehaved or were disrespectful. That got me thinking about the three acres that we sit on and how that can work to my advantage. My kids will soon be ready to run their first marathon!
The other weekend, we were working very hard in our backyard, trying to get the foxtails down to prevent further vet bills, and I realized something very special. Even though the property is a lot of work, we do enjoy ourselves in the quiet, peaceful town of Knightsen. The work is hard but the fruit is bountiful.
I often look up as I hear a neighboring hawk cry out. The neighbor's goats are calling out as they roam the acreage looking for that last bit of green grass. My horse is relaxing in the pasture and knickers a hello to me. My kids are out taking a lap. My husband is playing Farmer John in the tractor. Life is good in the country!
